Orienteering race (Australian 3 Days) 23:44 [5] *** 3.93 km (6:02 / km) +40m 5:45 / km

Sprint at Charles Sturt Uni.
Slow start in the bush because the scale threw me off because of small rocks on the ground looking big on the map. Took safe routes to minimise time loss and was running quite cautiously because of the lack of grip on my shoes and the amount of rocks and people in the terrain. By the time we got out of the bush, I was already almost 2 mins behind, which is kind of ridiculous, especially for a sprint.
#8 and #9 had fine routes, but were slow while my head switched over into urban sprint mode. Possibly should've taken the wide route around to #10, but there was just so many people around the arena that I think I would've lost as much time having to slow down to get around them that it wasn't worth it. Had a good plan for #11 but when I was 3/4 of the way there, I second guessed it and wasn't able to see the gap in the olive green that I had before so ended up going the whole way around and back. Looking now on the map more closely, there was in fact a gap, but I guess I would rather be safe than sorry anyway. Got caught on #12 from not reading the descriptions properly and also on #15 and had to go back and up. Slow on #19 because I was hesitating and having difficulty seeing the olive green, and then a bit hesitant on #20. Last few were fine, but I slowed a lot in the finish, where I should've been speeding up in another gear. Finish was slow from being cautious not to fall in though, but still.
Another really fun race. This weekend has been heaps fun, even if the races weren't quite the confidence builders I wanted. A bit disappointed with my orienteering but they were good to find what I really need to work on at the moment.

Orienteering race (Australian 3 Days) 57:07 [5] *** 8.01 km (7:08 / km) +220m 6:16 / km
10c shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212 #3

Long distance at Burngoogee.
Not a good start, stuffed up #1 and the next 4 behind me caught me. I was going okay but had dropped 2 contours and had not gone quite far enough, when I had lost contact so decided to head up to the bare rock and restart. Got to the bare rock but didn't check if I was on the small one or the big one and assumed that I was on the big one. Took a bearing and had I had been on the big one would've hit the control fine, but I didn't and kept heading down the slope, got to the big rock with the cliff on the side and checked the flag there but nope, wandered around to the next bunch of rocks before eventually heading back the other way and then up to the control.
Went straight for the long leg to #6. Was a bit unsure of where I was in the middle part on the top of the spur because just before I was about to climb over the top of the hill I came across a track and decided to follow it (???) As a consequence of not being confident of where I was, I was running was slower and more cautiously then I should've been. Came out at another track junction and figured vaguely where I was but was then thrown off by the distinctive pine trees but figured that I would eventually hit a fence if I went to far. Got to the water courses and changed direction more southeast and got to the track just before the control right where I wanted to, bingo. Regret not taking the track because it would've been a good few minutes faster I think.
Was a bit low on #7 and then went and checked another flag stupidly on the way to #8.
Stomach also felt yuck in general with a stitch during the warm up and then could feel liquid jolting around as I ran, and I also lacked a bit of energy at the end but I didn't think the race was long enough to justify taking a gel. Bum was also a little sore after yesterday.
Total time loss is probably close to 9 mins, which is pretty shocking.
Another really nice area though, really enjoyed this all the same.

Orienteering race (Australian 3 Days) 44:08 [5] *** 5.89 km (7:30 / km) +144m 6:41 / km

Middle Distance at Connorton.
Mucked up #2 really bad ~4:30 lost. I was a bit further on the right hand side of the slope than I wanted to be, then corrected myself but then I came across a knoll with rocks on it and went over to the right, across the wrong saddle. Was confused by nothing matching up and was generally pretty disorientated. Eventually corrected it. So bummed looking of routegadget because I was going fine before I randomly turned right. Not the only one who made this mistake though.
I also ran straight past #8 without seeing it, I think that I had spotted the flag for #9 and thought it must be mine and just bolted for it, when if I had double checked and looked up in the other direction, I would've been right next to the right control. Saw the shack at the top of the hill and was able to relocate from there. Lost about 1:30.
Lost about a min on #12 checking a flag a bit higher than mine on the hill. Stupid because I knew that it wasn't mine but checked it anyway in case.
Could also feel all the water I had drunk that afternoon floating around in my stomach, yuck and should've had a better lunch because I didn't have the energy to push as much as I wanted.
Lost probably around 6:30 in total.
Not quite the race I wanted, but definitely learnt a lot from it. Had some fast splits in the detail, especially in the second half after a slow start, it was just the longer legs that mucked me up.
Really fun though, such a cool area with really good running, even though I managed to fall at least 5 times.
