This heat would split the 10 of us into 11-15th place and 16-20th place. Looking at the field, there was a slight chance I could move forward, but very small.

Short analysis of why the heck I advanced: I was surprised at how fast I was running and a surprisingly large number (3) of those 10 people mispunched.

I was somehow leading after the first control ( a nice micro route choice beat Kai and I started quickly) but Kai took a better route out of the control so he got a fair bit ahead of me, and Julia was right on my tail due to a hesitation. She passed me at the baseball fields, and my goal after that was to hold on as long as possible.

We lost sight of Kai after 4, but I was still fairly close to Julia (she's really fast, so this was pretty shocking to me). I'd planned what I thought was the best route to 5, but decided if Julia took the other one I'd follower her because they were pretty comparable ( I was only worried about the indistinct trail) That did happen, but it ended up being not too bad. I took a different road route to 7 then her and gained a couple seconds there I think. After that, she pretty much took off and I tried to keep not fall further behind. Only problem after that was a hesitation because the buildings were off the map at 11 but I looked up and saw Julia and Ryan (who was in another heat and we had caught), I tried to push it as much as possible, passed Ryan and felt completely exhausted by the finish which was good.

(also at that point I knew Susan was behind me but wasn't sure about Brett)

The times ended up like:

1 Kai Mihata COC 16:07
2 Julia Doubson BAOC 16:30
3 Emma Sherwood None 16:51
4 Brett Buchholz COC 18:47
Susan Grandjean CROC COC msp 18:02

Pos. Name Club Time
1 Mark Prior SDO 14:35
2 Brian Gruber COC 17:24
3 Carlo Giacometti Gaja 19:16
Tori Borish None msp 15:21
Ott Toomet Ilves msp 16:04

So again, mispunches meant that I would've ended up in 6th but was actually Q2, so that was exciting and meant I would advance to fight for 11-15 in the final.

Loops 1: With Kai. Back and forth for most of it because he's a faster runner than me but made at least 3 small navigation mistakes. I think I punched the hub for the final time just before him but he passed me between this one and the next loop. Pretty happy with my orienteering and running on this one.

Loops 2: By myself, because Kai and Julia were on the other forking together and Mark was way ahead of us by that point. Some hesitations and not perfect routes, but not too bad. Probably slowed down here (since I was not head to head with people)

Racing back to the finish: the long leg after the loop I had not read ahead and only figured out what the better route was after I'd gone past the construction to the left and it wouldn't be worth it to turn back. Luckily I had caught up to Susan who had been in the previous heat so was pushing to keep up with/ pass her. By myself again for the last few controls, I think I took the good route around the veg to the second last control. Then I got passed, (this was not encouraging), by the 6-10th place heat at the go control.

I ended up beating the other guy in the heat, which was nice, and finished 14, beating my 19th seed nicely. (although, the way the bracket worked out and some mispunches helped me a lot in this). Last year I finished 18th after being seeded 18th.
