Note

Feet came out of the weekend unscathed (hurt a bit after classic style ski race, but only a dull pain), so I'm going to add a couple runs this week. Finally!

skiing - cross country warm up/down (skate) 1:00:00 [2]

Snow Farm
wet nor'wester. Low clouds, wind, sleety snow, variable snow conditions. yeehaa. Felt like fieldwork.

ski orienteering race (skate) 1:30:05 [4] ***

Snow Farm
Score event. Crikey, I was skiing terribly. There were a couple great route choices between controls (one of which I blew). The off piste sections were excellent! The really low visibility due to cloud cover and snow was definitely an advantage to some of us. The wind was a bit of a nightmare on the tops.

skiing - cross country (classic) 3:00:00 [1]

Snow Farm - slight nor'wester, clearing into the afternoon.

ski orienteering (classic) 16:30 [5] **

Snow Farm. Prologue race. time is approximate -- technical fault lost the times! It was a fantastic race though! Fast decisions, lots of track intersections, and a wee bit of off piste. Just a nice race. It has been too long since I skiied.

skiing - cross country (skate) 1:30:00 [2]

Snow Farm
Brilliant evening over the Southern Alps -- moody clouds bellowed from 1000-2000m on the main divide, cutting the setting sun. Some dog-sled teams passed through around the same time -- Absolutely fantastic.

mountain biking 22:30 [3]

Commute - Ocean Grove to University
Through golf course. Strong southerly -- doesn't bode well for the weekend.

Note
(injured)

Feet seem to be getting better, though I still haven't tested them thoroughly. I'll see how they feel at the ski-o, and go from there. Im' hoping I can to start running again next week... Already sick of pools and chlorine. I suppose I could swim in the ocean -- a balmy 9C I'm sure.

Awesome sky this morning -- stratus plumes clinging to the hills backdropped by aurora-like orange and red streaks.

Back to uni and then home via the golf course with Anna banana, Sophie bubbles, and Harry

Note
(injured)

I had a quick run down to the post office to assess the progress of my feet. Overall they felt good, certainly better, though I could still feel a deep dull pain at the primary point (inferior medial aspect of the calcaneus), and 500m is hardly an exhaustive test. I think I will continue to stay off them......hmm.

mountain biking 48:00 [3] +400m

Signal Hill
Went up Signal Hill road and came down tracks on west side. A disaster on slicks due to the partially frozen slick mud -- though I did get to see some bush I might not have otherwise chosen to go into... Gorse, though disasterously prickly, has fantastic elasticity, and is excellent for breaking crashes.

I wonder if anyone has ever studied how the biomechanical elasticity of plants relates to plant success in areas where there are populations of a large uncoordinated mammals... There must be a Marsden in that; though from what I hear it might be too applicable.

Along the Heathcote with Lara.
Started out moderate and picked up the pace until about halfway and then held it for the last 30minutes. Feet felt like shit -- 24hrs later it still hurts to walk. I'm taking two weeks completely off running to see what that does.

running 43:00 [3]

Along the Heathcote with Lara.
About 20min of this time was doing drills and strides on the playing fields. It was good to knock some of the tightness out of my legs.... My feet felt pretty good tonight, in general -- I did a lot of fairly aggressive 'golf ball' treatment today, which I'm hoping helped.

Sumner with La.
What an awesome day -- perfect weather (12C!!). We ran up over the headlands to Taylors mistake and around to Boulder Bay and up the ridge. Followed the ridge back to evans pass and down to sumner. Really nice run.... left foot is much better, on the other hand, the right foot felt crappy on all the down hill bits and still hurts to stand on several hours later.

Nichols creek with Lara.

We went up Leith valley, up the track to Nichols falls, cut up through the steep bush and overgrown farms to the Pineapple track, down McGowans and out Ross creek; stayed above the cliffs and came down Cozy Dell.....

Cool and frosty, but a really nice run. My feet were ok, but not great -- most pain came after the run.

Tuesday Jul 4, 2006 #

running terrain 1:29:00 [3] +450m

Mt Vernon -- up the dry ridge track, down the upper Rapaki track and then down the stream. I didn't take a headlamp so most of it was in the dark... the moon helped when the clouds cleared enough.

running 31:00 [3]

Along the heathcote with Lara

Frosty again, but nice. My achilles were tight so I was just along for the ride. La did 10x1min intervals....

Port Hills with La.
Up the gorge track to Mount Vernon. Along the ridge north. We came back down the rapaki track to the col and then down the stream. Wet and foggy this morning. The mountains are in snow and it looks clear on the west coast.
