orienteering 29:01 [4]
(injured)

Canterbury Champs Spencerville
Started out ok. I was slow on actually locating the control on a few of the first ones, and then had a nightnare on number 9 -- defeated by the vagueness of the map, I decided the only admirable thing to do was to insert a tree branch through the sole of my shoe and about halfway through my foot. Feeling reedeemed I returned to the car park.

orienteering race 39:13 [4] ****

Pines Beach
Three pretty critical errors...and one disaster

Bottle Lake
A nice training course. I was having a terrible night for bearings though, sliding left on at least half of the legs, somtimes over 30degrees. I had difficulty seeing the north line, but anyway... Good to have a burnout though. Feet only started to hurt on the way back through the first course.

tramping (field work) 1:00:00 [1] **

North Canterbury
Veg mapping in bashy broadleaf and coprosma scrub.

tramping 5:00:00 [2]

Williams Saddle with Lara
Slow run up the Edwards, bashed up the scrub to Williams Saddle and decended into the long beech slopes into the Minga. Hunted around Dudley Knob for Aaron, Sara and Karin, and then ran out the Minga. Great day in the Pass.

Styx with Lara
Again trying to wait out the weather -- but with snow down below 800m, low visibility, and pelting rain/sleet, and swelling rivers, we opted to head back down the Styx. Plans to go over Lanthrop and Zit Saddles will have to wait ....

tramping 4:00:00 [1]

Styx River with Lara
After trying to wait out the worst of the weather, we marched up the styx in some pretty horrid wet windy weather.

Left foot pretty grumpy...

same as yesterday -- left arch has shooting pain after 15 minutes.

Dalethorpe
Control setting for Dalethorpe. It is a very fast and fun forest -- the map, unfortunately, needs a bit of help (the interpretation of white and semi-open is quite variable and the rock features are oddly interpreted), but the contours are by and large very readable. I am always perplexed by maps that have only about seven cliffs, and they are still poorly mapped.... its not as though theres a lot else to be mapping. I made an attempt to correct some of the obvious problems, but I worry about what wasn't on the redline.... course setters notes 1. don't stray from the line. 2. don't piss off the sow (e.g., running through a pack of piglets). One hypothetical response is that she'll chase you for more than 50 m with the appearance of fully intending to devour your leg.

Bealay Spur with La
We went up the track to the hut -- poked around some of the nice forest patches on the way down.

Feet and achilles still very sore... will take tomorrow off.

Dry ridge
short loop over the toe of the spur. Feet and achilles are sore from this week, so taking it very easy...

orienteering race 43:26 [4] ***

Relay
A decent race all in all. I amde a few little stuff ups, but mostly just committed to running the redline wherever possible, and it seemed ot pay off. attackpoints were vague sometimes.

orienteering 1:40:41 [4] ****

Classic
Lots of little errors, a two fairly large mistakes. Pretty gruelling terrain, btu I was really into it. I did find the deja vu leg kind of an odd course design... if you liked it the first time, you're sure to like it the second?

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Training with Neil, Jamie Greg. Really good to get out on the map with these guys. Don't think I've ever gone over a course in such detail. Would be good to have us all in one place for this kind of thing more regularly.

orienteering 26:24 [4] ***

Hard start as all mass starts, but settled down after the first few. Made a couple small errors, but the forest was fast with good visibility...

running terrain 1:00:00 [3]

Bashing around with Lara, Jamie, Penny, James, and Ross. Good loop characterisitc of runs with Jamie. Felt like old times.

Jamie found a Dua within a few minutes of leaving the track, so that was a good start to the run... Lots of tracks in this area. great fun...

orienteering 44:38 [4] ****

Middle distance.
Screwed up two controls quite badly -- otherwise just slowon the terrain. Its been too long since I've run on rocky terrain....

running terrain 35:00 [3]

Afternoon run with La, Jamie, Penny, James, Neil and Ross, because we all felt like shit. Nice bushy hill to climb. Lots of leaping wallabies, but disappointinly no snakes. Felt hot/ dehydrated for most of the day...
