orienteering race 1:01:00 [4] *** 7.3 km (8:21 / km) +430m 6:27 / km

Apollo Hill

Good race, minute behind Michael and five minutes behind Chris. But I bloody well mis-punched no. 10. My fault, though the codes were 555 & 554, no more than 20m apart. One was in a shallow re-entrant the other in a low damp opening in the bush. oh well. I don't think it would have been more than 30s to relocate if I read the code.

running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

orienteering 1:00:00 [2] ****

Checked map and control sites with Lara at Paramanui. Diabolical map in places, and tricky to incorporate route-choice.

running terrain long 2:00:00 [3] ** +919m

Beautiful climb from the Charteris Bay, Banks Peninsula up Mount Herbert (919m). Left from Lara's family bach, looped up through farmland and bush to tussock ridgeline and down farm tracks to Russells bach. The harbour was like a mill pond. Nice views out toward Akaroa and up to the Kaikoras. Grey over the Canterbury plains, but we were in the sun.

Felt good on the hill, though a bit stiff on the long down hill.

Lost contact with the map (1:50000) for a short period. odd.
