Orienteering race (MiniGaine) 2:54:40 [5] *** 29.58 km (5:54 / km) +200m 5:43 / km
spiked:46/50c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Not the best preparation and run but somehow managed the undeserved win. Had been moving all weekend leading up to the run and only had one proper meal (Oporto) in the previous 36hrs till lunch just 2 hrs before starting. Didn’t have much time to plan but got an ok route which was supposedly 1.5km longer than optimum. On top of that, I felt worse than the 20 or so long runs I did over the Summer.

Started with a loop in Field of Mars bushland 32 and then 50 where a guy told me off for running too fast as I passed him. Then he proceeded to cheat and run through the out-of-bounds bush. Only in Rogaining! Continued through 62-12-82-73-34-24-43-92-40-41-51 then a short street run 64-30-22 and back into the bush trails 80-31-60-100-74-61-14-102. It was about 80 min and I was getting so dehydrated and feeling a bit sick. I then stopped at tap a house for a few minutes to have a drink. It felt like a real struggle from here on in collecting 33-81-44-103-43-20-93-71-90-23-72-101-94 and finished along the streets and Macquarie Hospital 91-54-42-83-52-13-104-84-63-10-70-11-21. Was just in cruise mode for last hour just making sure I had enough time to collect the lot as I already thought Mounty and others would be 20 minutes ahead. Turns out they had similar issues.

Good course which maximised the use of some great trails. Thanks Steve and Jeremy.

Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series #26) 49:10 [5] *** 10.25 km (4:48 / km) +50m 4:41 / km

Last race of the season. Steve and I were going down to the wire. He needed to win the last race to force a countback which his 99 would have beaten my 4 x 98's. Apparently, if he was 1 second slower when he achieved his 99 I'd have it wrapped up.

Anyway, pushed pretty hard tonight on a great 'sprint like' course through some bushland and the Uni. Didn't make any errors except maybe a straighter line to no.3 saving 10 secs. Also by the end it was very dark which forced me to slow down a little.

Got all controls in 49.10 to Steve's 49.40 so we tied for the night but I was lucky enough to win a very close series 14-13. Our close battle made it more enjoyable and worthwhile coming back each week.

Ok run. Stupidly pulled up short no.6 then took the track option to 7 which wasn't ideal. Cut in too early at 11 too. Other than those felt pretty good running. Got top time to Greg Barbour but only gained lead running to last control. Will need to work on terrain fitness leading up to Easter.

Good run starting from Clontarf Reserve through 4, 2, 30 then an early slog up the hill to 27 and 21. Really picked up the pace around the top part of the course running 3.45 min/k’s through 16, 12, 14, 25, 17, 23, 13, 24, 11. Then the bush bits started through 11, 20, 22, 19, 26, 9, 28. Was supposed to run up the track to 7 but couldn’t find it so aborted and ran up the hill to do a small loop through 15, 3, 18, 10, 1 and 5. Got the win 20 points ahead of Steve R. Pushed a little harder today as the overall battle between Steve and I is getting very close. With 1 race left it’s 13-12 to me but if he wins next week he wins on a countback. His 99 beats my four 98’s. I’ve really enjoyed our competition this year.

West Pennant Hills. Misjudged how long it'd take to get around. Skipped one of them in the middle (can't remember the number). Then cruised last bit as was early. Should have got 600 with better planning. Finished on 580 behind Steve R, Horrocks and Tom Joss on 590.

Orienteering race (Sydney Sprint Series #10) 19:46 [5] *** 4.09 km (4:50 / km) +58m 4:31 / km
spiked:23/23c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Started early as I had to leave to go to the Eels game. Got all controls fine - just a few seconds here and there, maybe could have picked some slightly better route choices on a couple. Looking at splits, got slower towards the end. Finished 19 secs behind Brooner and secs in front of Aidan Dawson.

Last Sprint of the season. Good fun course. And good series all around, enjoyed every course. These should go longer.

Swaines Creek in Chatswood. Felt good and hamstring warmed up pretty well. Did a loop through no.7, 6, 14, 22, 5. Then should have got no.9 and 25 but went onto 24, 12, 26, 15, 29, 16, 30, 17. Coming through the bush to 25 from the west wasn't great then going to 28 and 4 was slow as the bush was pretty dark. Then a slog up the hill through 18, 8 , 27, 23, 19 and a long downhill through 3, 1, 32, 11 and 13. Finished with 7 secs to spare for 550 points. Tom Joss-540, Glenn Horrocks-530, Steve R-530.

Orienteering race (Sydney Sprint Series #9) 19:47 [5] 4.08 km (4:51 / km) +34m 4:39 / km
spiked:15/22c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Sprint at Pyrmont. Felt a bit flat and hamstrings weren't great. Didn't push too hard as it was a little slippery from raining all day. There were a lot of route choices but missed the best one on a few including losing 30 secs on no.6 by going the stairs. Had a dodgy time through 12-15 not thinking clearly losing 5 secs or so on each. Got the wrong route choice to no.17 and got stuck behind traffic going down to no.20. All up probably about 1.5 min lost due to errors. Finished 3rd well behind Brooner (17.34) and Josh (18.37).
