Day #5 at Ravels Zuid, Belgium.

Early start today and found I was just trying to warm up through the first few controls trying to get feeling in my hands and feet. No huge time losses today, just a load of small ones in the circle trying to find a hidden control in vague Belgian terrain. Again finished well behind in 21st, 17 min behind German Christoph Brandt. Finished 17th overall.

Day #4 at Ravels Noord, Belgium.

Started dead last and only saw a couple people on other courses the whole way round. Pretty good through first half but had a few bad ones in 2nd half. Found it very difficult to read the creeks and vegetation. There's usually a creek every few metres but they only map some. Everything in Belgium is so vague, most creeks were only usually 20cm deep today. Spent a lot of time running round every creek looking for the control. Also lost time with controls on vegetation boundaries (the boundaries aren't clear at all). Finished in 20th, 17 min behind Norweigan Bojan Blumenstein.

Day #3, WRE at Pijnven in Lommel, Belgium.

Messed around on #2 and #4 and got caught by the guy starting a minute behind me. Pretty much ran the rest of the course together. Found it hard to read all the knolls and depressions as they weren't very high and obvious. Quite a few 30 sec errors but still way off the top guys. Finished in 28th, 13 minutes behind Belgian Tristan Bloeman.

Day #2 after missing Day #1 as would have had to leave Christmas Day to get there in time.

Map was just over the Belgian border in Holland in sand dune terrain. Felt pretty good and ended up being in the middle of a train the whole way around after stuffing up #2 looking in a 200m long ditch which I later saw was under the line of the course. Couldn't work it out at all and cost me 4 minutes. Probably would have end up in the same train at some point anyway. Finished well down in 21st, 14 min behind German Christoph Brandt.

Ash Ranges

Good area, love O in new terrains. Ok run in parts but still making many small mistakes. Getting better each run here though. Lost time at #3 missing the correct path (1 min), straightish route to #6 (1 min), strayed off route choice to #13 (1 min), overrunning #16 (1 min), couldn't see control hidden in heath at both #20 & #21 (2 min), bad route choice to last #24 (1 min) plus a few other smaller things. Still getting used to running in terrain. Finished in 14th, 17 min behind Jegor Kostylev.

Big Wood, Watford

Fast open course with a number of forest patches which included many depressions from quarries and bombings. Lost a min at #5 trying to cut through a small quarry but couldn't get out because it was so slippery. Other than that only 5-10 secs at a few. Finished 2.5 min ahead of the field.

O at Sheepleas & Effingham Woods. Better run than yesterday but still not recovered from Canary Islands. Slightly more comfortable in terrain, however really got to get proper shoes. Had a pretty clean run but looking back should have been more confident and straight lined many more controls. Finished 5th, 6 min behind Jack Leitch.

O at Ightham Common. Was pretty slow due to legs being sore still, muddy and slippery underfoot with the wrong shoes and not used to running in terrain recently. Only real time loss was 45 secs on #1 getting into the map. Finished 2nd, 12 secs behind Jack Klosky.

Token effort of write up

Course was in Anaga, the Northern tip of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. I can't recall any of it being flat. It was either up or down.

Started off ok in about 15th place through the first 15km. Lost a few spots on the first big downhill but made them back up in the first big climb feeling ok by the 3rd aid station at 21km. But that's when it all started falling apart. To follow was a huge uphill of 8km and about 1000m climb and I totally blew up from the start of it. I was getting hot and getting really dehydrated and was getting passed every couple of minutes, probably about 50 places. I had to resort to walking and must have looked wrecked as walkers gave me orange juice and later coke to help me get up. It took me a good 1.5 hrs for the climb and just lay down at the aid station. After about 5 minutes started off again, very slowly. The downhills were killing my quads and had no power on the hills. All I wanted to do was finish, counting down the aid stations and the km's on my watch. Finished so far back by the end and had never been so happy that it was over.

Amazing scenery though. Also the Spanish like to talk a lot during the run. I couldn't understand what they were saying but also probably had no energy to respond. Many of them offered gels and food. The race was all a good vibe.
