Run race (Rainbow Beach Marathon) 3:55:27 [5] 42.63 km (5:31 / km) +977m 4:57 / km
shoes: Asics Kayano 25

2nd by 18 seconds. Started in Wave 2 of 3 each 10 minutes apart. I ended up running out front with 1 other guy. From 5-10km he gapped me a minute but eventually started reeling him in. But at 15km I sprained my ankle ripping through the tape so had to walk it off for a few hundred metres. Got to the 8km beach section and could see him ahead and passed him as he was done. Two years ago I had a good beach section running up in 4.15min/km so tried to match it but was about 10 secs per km this year. As I got to the end and the top of the lighthouse I had caught nearly the entire stacked Wave 1 lead group of 10. The top few had run an extra 2km with a wrong turn. The 4km from the lighthouse was tough in soft sand up to my ankles in parts so backed right off. By the time we got to the trails again none of Wave 1 stayed with me and I was on my own for the last 10km taking it easy on the downhills without any tape on my bad ankle. Tried to finish as strong as possible not knowing how Wave 3 was going. Ended up just behind the leader.

My time was 5 min slower than my winning time 2 years ago. Probably would have been similar without the ankle problem. Also I think the sand from 26-30km was a lot softer this year which is probably another 4 min worth.

My lingering knee problem since marathon a few weeks ago had gone. The taper was good for it. Calf was still tight but manageable and I think will go away with further massage. Now I have a new ankle injury to add to the collection.
