Orienteering (Control Setting/Pick up) 1:46:09 [2] ***
spiked:23/23c shoes: Icebug MR BUGrip

Low 30s, partly cloudy - Didn't sleep very well last night. I was probably too worried about getting up in the morning... Got started at 8am to finish putting up the rest of the white/yellow controls (9), then set up the registration/start area. The ground was covered in a crunchy frosted layer, which made for a much nicer footing. It was also much easier to see and navigate in the daylight than with my headlamp last evening. Once Matthew arrived with the new stands, I ran over to put them out as the first starters went out on the course.

The weather held out nicely for us, so everyone who came had a good time. The fire, hot chocolate, chilly, and marshmellows also helped. Initial feedback was generally good, other than a few grumblings about cold creek crossings and very steep hill climb. Not sure what I couldn't done about the climb (there's no easy way to get up that hill). Perhaps more zig-zagging instead of straight up? Dick suggested that with SI, we could take out that leg's time.

Anyway.. for controls pick up, I had a lot of help, so only had to pick up 11 of them on the big hill. We made it out of the park just when it got dark. Long day.

Running (Mixed trail/terrain) 15:00 [2] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Icebug MR BUGrip

After I got done setting things up, and before anyone arrived, I went on a short run to explore the southern hillside and to stay warm. There's an unmapped trail that goes up along the property line. However, the terrain is so steep there I'm not sure how useful it will be for orienteering unless we can get permission from the private land owners to use the hill top areas.

Orienteering (Control Setting) 2:51:35 [2] ***
spiked:31/34c shoes: Icebug MR BUGrip

~40F, overcast - Spent the afternoon putting out controls for tomorrow's meet. I was able to use Dick's homemade control-carrying backpack. Very handy, saving me several trips back to the car. But boy, it sure gets heavy with 18 sets of controls (stands, punches, flags, SI)!!! Not only are my legs tired, shoulders and arms are also feeling it. Navigated without compass the whole time, but only had a couple drifting errors. Saw a group of riders along the trail S of creek. And heard the ATVs on the northern hills once again. Oh yeah, the water level of Gunpowder was up a bit over last week. The current was also stronger, but still crossable.

I still have a dozen or so controls to put out, which I will do first thing in the morning. It was getting very dark, making it difficult to spot the trail. Besides, my headlamp was dying (low battery), so I bailed back to the car. Total time spent was about 5hrs. Only time on the move is logged.

Stretching warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Afterwards, at home.

Strength (Calisthenics) 15:00 [1]

Exercises for knees, hips, and gluts.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:14:00 [2] *** 5.44 km (13:36 / km) +140m 12:03 / km
ahr:143 max:172 spiked:13/14c shoes: Silva O' Spikes (Rubber)

OCIN Night-O - Hueston Woods SP, Oxford, Ohio.
Permanent Course: About 6km to sweep, 20c. (1:10 000, 5m)
2-hr Score format
Mid 40s, drizzly.

Because I had to leave early, Mike kindly let me start 30min before the official mass start. It was dark, cool, and wet. So I kept a deliberate pace throughout, only running a couple of the road portions. The eos kept illuminating my breath, which made for a foggy vision the whole time. Many times I was standing on the ridge tops, looking down into the black void that were the reentrants below. They just seemed bottomless! So I went around a couple times to be safe. After starting out a bit shaky, the rest of the orienteering was pretty clean (and slow). R-glut started feeling tired around the 1-hr mark. Nice fun course. I'll have to come back another time for more practice.

Soccer (Indoor) 30:00 [4]
shoes: Adidas Absolion TRX FG David B

After the night-o, made it just in time for the game. I felt fine running around the field, only that I'm out of shape and out of breath a lot! We won 3-1. I recorded an assist and a goal! R-glut continues to be a little sore.

Cycling (Stationary) 1:00:00 [3] 21.36 mi (21.4 mph)
weight:57.2kg

Level 11, Hills, 588c.
I feel out of shape already! HR probably got into threshold range. After finishing, I had cold sweat/chill feeling - not good. Perhaps a sign of low blood sugar? or hyperthermia? I sweated a lot as usual, but the room wasn't like super warm. It's the same exercise (duration, program, intensity) I've been doing all these weeks, too! So strange... maybe I really am coming down with something.

Stretching warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Taking my time to stretch out and try to feel better. It helped, a little.

Merry Christmas!
and surprise, more partying! If eating actually counts as training, then I've certainly been training hard this last few days... I feel bloated.

More vegging out...
To get in line with the holiday giving mode, I did however donate a unit of blood. It hurt. The guy didn't quite have the gentle touch...

reference stats: bp=118/70, temp=97.1, hr=68, iron=48, cholesterol=find out next week, eligible=2/18/08.
Iron level was on the high side, but still acceptable (range is 35-54). Everything else looked normal.
