Warm U/D 15:00 [3]

10 AM

Orienteering 1:00:59 [4] *** 6.07 km (10:03 / km) +50m 9:39 / km
ahr:169 max:187 12c shoes: Icebug Zeal Spikes

Same deal as the other two days re 'puter

Race Time: 60:46
Placed: 4/7

Raudavatn | 10,000 | 5m

S-1 hesitant but okay
1-2 massive error in the control circle I knew where I was but couldn't locate the pit. The controls are placed well in the bottom of pits and they are narrow in diameter... Silly but oh well probably lost ~6mins
2-3 straightforward
3-4 my best split!
4-5 straightforward
5-6 went too far northeast and had to come down at it
6-7 straightforward
7-8 saw the path route but chose the overland route but then made a compass error and ended up on the path and so did that route and it was straightforward so should have just done the road route the whole time ;p
8-9 faceplated in the flowers and wiggly in the circle but otherwise good
9-10 easy peasy
10-11 neat and long took the safe route with slightly more climb on the paths
11-12-F straight straight down to the teepee structure and then on to the go control and then straight run across the field to the finish :)

Room for improvement (goals have been tweaked!) but an enjoyable course!

Note

What an awesome experience I was very fortune to have with wonderful people on great maps/terrain!

I finished the weekend just off the podium in 4th in the final standings - crazy!

To think I only started this sport 5 years ago and this weekend I felt completely at ease flipping over my D21 map/courses excited to see where I'd be running :)

Orienteering race 1:40:47 [4] *** 8.67 km (11:37 / km) +100m 10:59 / km

Data coming when I'm back in Canada (sans 'puter)

Race Time: 100:37
Placed: 7/11

Heidmork | 1:10,000 | 2.5m

Lots of hesitations and bobbles. Took a little while to get into the map and jiving with my compass bearing and towards the end I was rolling my ankles a wee bit in the terrain.

S-3 went alright nothing great but nothing poor
3-4 crewed up when I hit the trail I forgot my plan part way and misidentified what trail I was on which was frustrating because it WAS my plan
4-5-4-5 so I was running to 4 but found 5 first (I was not the only on to do this) then navigated back to 4 and then back to 5 - let sigh
~it was here that Jen caught me by 7 minutes :P ~
5-6 was a long, but neat to start, trail run to 6
6-7 bobbled a wee bit in my approach went R not L
7-8 executed this quite well!!
8-9 bobbled in the control circle
~ 6-9 struggled running in the terrain ~
9-10 executed quite well! But slowing down a wee bit
10-11 straightforward into 11 I was starting to navigate much better and more confidently but was much slower
11-12 poor route choice out to the main path vegetation was much harder to move through than it looked on the map
12-13 slow but pretty alright
13-14 probably my best and most successful leg :D
14-15 quite well done
15-16 done
16-17 I wanna get down to that path blind descent
17-F run down the path

Not as well as I could have done but I'm not disappointed. Learned lots and got to try out some really neat terrain!

Event: ICE-O 2017

Warm U/D 10:00 [3]

6 PM

Orienteering race 32:32 [4] 4.51 km (7:13 / km) +10m 7:08 / km
ahr:170 max:191 shoes: Icebug Zeal Spikes

Data coming when I'm back in Canada (sans 'puter)

Race Time: 32:19
Placed: 8/11

MY FIRST INTERNATIONAL RACE! (NA races don't count haha) oh and I forgot to mention that there were wild Icelandic ponies around control 4 :D

Terrain was as though Bishops Land and a Scottish Moor had a love child. As well the area was full of extra unmapped water because as the start man said "Iceland is waterproof!"

Raudholar (Reykjavik) | 1:5000 | 2m

S-1 was straight forward
1-2 was not ideal cut too far north between the paved area and the partially enclosed depression but knew it as it happened so recovered well
2-3 too far east and hit the BIG chevron shaped rock pillar cliff thingy first then bounced over to 3 which was on a less impressive rock feature
3-4 went 'well' hesitated over the path on the map being under water and not evident and a path that was not on the map slightly more east and very evident. I trusted the rock features I was using and went in!
4-5 crunch rock road = faster than lose misc rocks with veg
5-6 went right and contoured to the path then straight picking off depressions until I punched 6 which had a Jen coming up and punching from below while I punched from above I was quite surprised to see her and so suddenly and so close :p
6-7 drawn by the crowd too far northeast circled 1 depression to get back to the correct side where the control was
7-8 went well
8-9 again drawn by the crowd at a control a little south while mine was at the bottom of the depression a little north
9-10 long run on the crushed paths that I ran all the harder because I had Jen behind me since 6 punched 10 and had barely made it up the little hill before Jen was punching
10-11-12 went well very straightforward
12-F Jen passed me here and we ran together with me a bit behind to finish

We ended up exactly 2:00 mins apart which is fun as that was exactly our start distance apart :D

Note

Arrived safely in Reykjavik and had two days for the price of one! Thank you time change it's been a while since I've pulled 24+ hours.

Wandered around for 20+ km, saw lots of cute shops, got our camping pass and saw a giant topographical map of Iceland at City Hall, went to the Icelandic Phallological Museum, a beautiful church modeled on the hexagonal basalt formations, the trial run of the new Museum of Icelandic Wonders 'Glaciers and Ice Caves' exhibit for 1ISK, and then fumbled our way through the last 200m of the control that was our accommodation (to be fair to us there was VERY little info to go on haha). In that order :p
