Note

It's official. Hip surgery is in my future :-( now I just have to work out when makes the most sense, as the surgeon reckons I'll be on crutches for about 3 weeks, and with limited activity for 3 months. No return to running for 5-6 months, so I am guessing no skiing either this winter really......

Running (trails) 31:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:20 / mi)
(injured) shoes: LaSportiva Bushido

At Rock Meadow with Kristin. Probably further than the GPS thought, as the trails are pretty windy in the trees over there.

Run was courtesy of a Marcaine shot into the area of the torn labrum in the morning, and the doctor said to do anything that you would normally do, so a run seemed in order. Hip didn't hurt, but certainly didn't feel right (probably because it was numb). Hurts now though (writing this at 7pm)

The purpose of the shot was to see if it eliminated some of the referred pain that I seem to have from the labrum. Not sure it was totally conclusive, as I was still tender on the front tip of my pelvis, but less so than usual.

First run since May 22nd, and probably last for a while too. Surgery to repair the labrum could be as soon as a month, rehab time is uncertain bit could be as little as 6 weeks apparently given that suturing the labrum and shaving bone appears to be all that is required

Note
(injured)

Met with an ortho surgeon today. Saw the MRI of my hip today and there is definitely a flap of labrum where it tore. His plan is to remove a bit that can't be fixed, and suture the rest back to the socket. Then shave the head of the femur to remove excess bone that is likely the cause of the tear. He doesn't think he has to do anything with the cartilage as it all looks pretty good apparently. and he thinks that the intercostal strain is unlikely to have been the cause if the labral tear,

But, before that, he wants to inject a strong painkiller into the hip joint to make sure that the labrum is indeed the problem as I also have referred pain around the area, so that will happen in the next week or two. Once that has been administered he want's me to do "normal activities" to check that I can't make it hurt. Guess that means I go for a run? it'll be the first time for three months, so I am guessing it won't be a real test......

Then surgery, perhaps as soon as 6 weeks from now. and recovery should be reasonably quick if they don't have to do anything to the cartilage

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Perhaps not a good idea (hips hurt more afterwards) but I needed to do something while kristin and bridget ran together. In pine hills, rutland, vt. Back is also tight still, with some referral.of pain down my left leg

Canoeing race (c2 stern) 1:38:24 [4] 11.6 mi (8:29 / mi)
(injured)

NE champs with Kevin. Going well until about 2 miles from the end, then was starting to fade. Really faded about 1 mile from the end and the group got away, and we got caught by another boat that I just couldn't stay with.

Back felt OK while paddling. Not so great by the end of the day, but the visit to the beer festival on the way North to see Bridget helped

Canoeing warm up/down (c2 stern) 12:00 [1] 0.4 mi (29:59 / mi)
(injured)

Before the NE champs

Friday Aug 3, 2018 #

Note

Intended to do my hip exercises, but a bad back coupled with not getting home from work until 8:30 means I haven't. Oh well

Canoeing (c1 flatwater) 1:39:07 [2] 8.48 mi (11:42 / mi) +18m 11:37 / mi
(injured)

Charles from DFS. Up to golf course bridge, down to Moody St, and back. Chasing c2's most of the time, but in the wind on the way back they got away

Back is annoyed. Not sure what by. Added to the hips I am just a wreck at the moment....
