Local meet race 2:21:00 [5]**** 3.6 km (39:10 / km) +120m 33:34 / km
spiked:4/18c shoes: Hiking boots
Not sure I spiked 4; maybe more like 2.

Control 1: I ran SE from the start down to the small creek, and my plan was to follow the creek there. Somehow I got on the trail that went up to 14, saw it, and turned around. I was supposed to slow down at the bend to the right, and go in at the bend to the left, but I overran them and went all the way to the hill further down the trail. (where I would look for #3)
As I was coming back, I went in too early and it took me awhile to not find the ditch that I was looking for, so I decided it was farther down the trail, so I got back on the trail, and saw it from the trail. Took me 15 minutes.

Control 2: I should have taken a bearing to this one, but I didn't, and I was way left of it. I didn't go right because the vegetation didn't match, and finally I decided to take a bearing from the cul-de-sac. I headed more right than I should have, and ended up in the open cove thing over there. When I saw that that wasn't right, I decided to go right, and then take another bearing. I finally found it after the second bearing.

Control 3: Gerald (or some body else, I didn't get a good look) was 100 meters behind me, so I ran in a general north direction, without even looking at my map until I hit the trail. Somehow I passed the sharp curve that was supposed to be my collecting feature, and ran up the hill, which wasn't supposed to be there, and then I saw a control on the orange course, but it was the wrong #. I thought I was on the little trail I was supposed to take, and went that direction, and went down to the river and aligned the map with it, and that told me I was E of it. so I went W, and came to the same orange course conrol, but it was still the same wrong #, so this time I went down the bigger trail, but that didn't tell me anything (If I was where I thought I was, I should have gone uphill, but instead I went downhill). So I went in right there and circled around to the cliff that I thought wasn't supposed to be that high, and to same ornage control, and the number still wasn't right, but I hadn't found anything else, and the hint matched what I was looking for (the hint was a depression, and there was a depression where the rootstock was, so I thought they had just put the wrong # in.)

Control 4: My plan was to run back on the trail and take a bearing from the edge of the road. As soon as I saw the clearing, I looked over the edge of the hill, and saw several big trees that they could have been behind. (but the hint was "rootstock" not "big tree") So I went down the hill and about 1/2 way down I saw the control! By now my time was some where around 50-55 minutes.

Control 5: This was the last of my really bad ones. I wandered around in the white area N of 4. I saw 4 several times, and tried to get a bearing from it. When I came to the 2nd creek, I couldn't remember if I had crossed the 1st creek or not. I thought I didn't and wandered around in there. I came to the place where the big creek ends and the 2 split out from it, and I really wasn't thinking, so I didn't cross over into the "island" that I needed to be in. I went all the way down to where the creek goes into the big creek, and teh vegetation and creek angles matched the map exactly, so I figured out that I was in the wrong island. After that I didn't have any trouble finding it.

I was entering the second third of the course with more than an hour and 15 monutes. I was leaving my really bad part and entering my not so good part.
Control 6:I decided to follow a bearing for this one. (what I should have done for about all of them.) I was right on, and saw the control about 2/3 of the way there. There was a lot of mud just below the control, and I wondered why the mud doesn't just go down the hill.

Control 7: I decided to go to this one and aim right to use the small creek as a collecting feature. I probably went into the out of bounds area, because I followed the creek longer than I should have. Oops! :( I did good after that, although I hesitated more than I should have.

Control 8: Wow! I should have followed a bearing! I ended up at the creek juntion in the extreme West part of the map. I was still heading a little right, though. I went into the graveyard and kept looking into the woods for the control.

Control 9: I kept a little to the left of the creek and then a little to the left of the hill. I hesitated when I thought I had gone the same distance in the highlands as I had in the lowlands, but then I saw it.

Control 10:I went up the hill and followed the trail. I hesitated when the trail turned to go around a fallen tree, but then I saw it.

Control 11:I sould have done better thumbing on this one, because I confused 11 with 16, and thought I was looking for a clearing directly SW, but actually I was lookng for a tree next to a fence. After I figured that out I ddin't have a whole lot of trouble finding it.

Control 12:My plan was to go S on the trail, and take the small trail to it. I saw another control and went to check the #. It wasn't the right one, so I kept going S. I never did see the trail.

Control 13:I took the wrong way back to the main trail; the vegetation was dense. I was going to use the lake/swamp as a collecting feature, and then use the follow the ditch there. There is an unmapped ditch that I followed that goes towards the swamp (NE to SW), that I wasted time on. I didn't have trouble after that.

Control 14: I had already seen this one when I was heading to 1. I went to the trail and turned left and then turned right on the other trail. That hill is steeper than it looks!

Control 15:I followed the creek straight to this one.

Control 16:I decided to use the trails for this one. (Hey, I actually had enough energy left!) I passed 18 and then 17, and found it pretty easy.

Control 17:I remember exactly where this one was when I came by here before, so it was easy.

Control 18: I hesitated when I came to the 1st trail, because there was another control there. I dont think I checked the #, because I knew it wasn't it. I saw the control from the trail/clearing.
