I thought I picked a pretty good route choice for the long leg (8), but after looking at the map more and talking with other people, I think I took one of the worst routes. I went back to the right of 5, then folowed the creek to the horse trail, and took that all the way back to the trailhead. Then I went through the field and took the shortcut to the badlands trail.

Now I think the best way there is to take the creek back to the start/registration and turn left on the road and go up the hill at the intersection. It doesn't eliminate a lot of climb, but it is a lot shorter.

The climb was a little bit less than the Middle distance course, and the distance was a little bit more. It's kind of late to start training, but some training is better than no training.

The skiing/snowboarding season ended yesterday :(
