A lot more green today on the map. First 10 controls were quite slow with mistakes in the circle or attacking the control. Especially the first control where I ran up the reantrant but never looked 5m to my right in the green. Got better as I went along, but made an annoying minute mistake on 2nd last control.
Overall not actually too disappointed with the race. It was my first proper ME race, I feel like I was thinking clearly during the race (something I don’t do frequently enough), and fun terrain.
I’m definitely missing the precision needed for races in terrain like this and some of the Scandinavian forests I’ve visited.

Screwed that one up quite a bit. First 8 controls weren’t too bad and then it was the opposite. Mispunched, but I actually did visit the control. I distinctly remember hooking that control and some on my course beating me to it.

Hectic start when I thought it was a 3 minute call-up but was in fact 2 minutes, which I learned punching the start. Only one major mistake about 10s, likely due to the frustration of someone walking the course taking forever to punch. Eh I’ll add more later

Found a marked trail to run on but it was 5 km away and decided no need to run 20k, an hour and a half will do. So ran that direction, looked up and found a big hill to run up so ran up that, and then back to Portalegre.

Got up at 5:15 to make sure I got the only train (or connections) to Portalegre. So an easy run later to move the legs. 3k up the hill/mountain along a road and then took a trail I found down.

Tuesday Mar 5 #

Watched stopped part way and had to restart so added 830m to make it 13.75km.
First 20 controls were quite poor. Got there and decided, I’ve royally fucked this, so might as well just try and do some decent orienteering on the last 8 controls and actually feel I’ve done something. Granted there wasn’t much green in this final portion, but I’m still happy with the ending at least.

Improvement over yesterday. No big mistakes and felt I was anticipating where the control would be quite well. Started a bit slow and then Albin ridefelt sprinted past me so figured should probably pick up the pace. Most of my time loss was due to me swerving or in general feeling like my orienteering was a little drunk.
Goal tomorrow is again to keep the plan and walk out of control. However I’ll “draw” a route on my map, look up and keep to it.
