orienteering 30:00 [2]
shoes: Nike terra humara

Ruissalo (FIN)

Took Gareth, AJ, Alex, Vanessa and Toph out to an old favorite training area, Ruissalo island. Easy jog hanging out controls (toilet paper) around a sprint course in forrest/park. Legs feeling fresh after the afternoon off yesterday.

Afterwards went to the nearby beach for a swim, a bite for lunch and bird watching. Freezing water, extra recovery should be good for Toph's legs. Another day in perfect blue skies +27.

Tempo run around the Ispoinen forrest tracks in the afternoon. Looking forward to cooking hamburgers for dinner... yum!

JUKOLA 2006 SALO (FIN)

Up at 3am to watch the Jukola tv coverage. Our team's goal was to reach the top10 and it was well on track after the second leg, however during the long night (3rd leg) Mikko Hölso lost large amounts of time and large gaps started to form amongst all the teams. Alot of my pre-Jukola nerves were taken away now that I had to start out in 30's position.

20min warm up.

63mins race: kept good contact in this very detailed terrain and maybe a little too cautious at times. Ran alone during most of the race except the common controls where I saw Kim Faggerud (TuS) and Martins Sirmain (TuMe). Took a few questionable route choices. Near the end I lost the ever important contact, 2mins mistake!!!

20min warm down.

24th overall position, not exactly our aim but a solid result none the less. Personaly I was just not as well prepared for this terrain as the other guys at this level, it often takes a month to get into scandinavian terrain and feel even remotely competitive. The focus continues still towards DK woc, I will run alot more orienteering technique sessions in the coming weeks.

Salo (FIN)

Easy jog around the official Jukola model map (on the edge of the Jukola terrain). Map is very accurate and detailed, its going to be essential to keep 100% contact. Legs kicking over nicely and pre-jukola nerves setting in.

orienteering 1:00:00 [4]
shoes: VJ twister

Salo (FIN)

Official Jukola training course 'Lakianummi' 8km. Beautiful terrain, very technical hill tops, short sharp climbs and reasonably fast vegetation if you want to push a bit harder and your navigational skills are upto it. Felt good over the distance, managed to make only 1mistake after I caught Blair. Route choice is as important as anything in this terrain.

Lunch with Jimbo, Alex, Toph, Blair and Vanessa in Salo, €4 pizza again. The Jukola competition centre is getting busy.

1day to Jukola... and 1more terrain training.

Turku (FIN)

15min warm up.
Mona's fartlek on the ski tracks near Ispoinen, nice to run on the paths and despite being 6pm still very warm and sunny conditions.
10min warm down.

Event: Forssa Games

orienteering 30:00 [3]
shoes: VJ twister

Salo (FIN)

Technique training on one of the official Jukola training areas (2km from event centre) with AJ, Alex, Blair, Toph and Jimbo. Nice to be running on a finnish map again, loads of rock information but also fairly open. Not a very heavy session as I will run Forssa later tonight where I can have a bit of a faster training with Jukola 2days away.

Just heading out for Pizza lunch with the boys for my B'day.

Forssa Games (FIN)

20min warm up.
30min race.
20min warm down.

7pm start with a total field of 180 in H21E. Very typical Forssa map with lots of rocky ground, green vegetation and boulders. 1min start intervals and after a small error at control1 Marius Bugan (runner starting after me) was already within sight. Overall ended up mid field in this VERY tight competition some 5mins down on tonights winner Tero Föhr. Nice to run some fast orienteering 2days out from Jukola although I must be a little disapointed as 107th is a long way off 4th, my best result at a Forssa Games.

Turku (FIN)

Easy jogging around city forest near Turku.

Not exactly my plan, after waiting all day for my bags to arrive (running gear) it was a nice feeling to atleast run even if it was not on the Jukola training maps. Looking forward to tomorrows Jukola training and Forssa competition in the evening.

RASTI KURIKKA 1ST TEAM ANNOUNCED!!!
1.-os. Sami Löfbacka
2.-os. Matti Vainionpää
3.-os. Mikko Hölsö
4.-os. Esko Ylikangas
5.-os. Ville Uitto
6.-os. Troy De Haas
7.-os. Juha-M Huhtanen

I feel happy with my position in the team and know I am ready to play a larger part unlike I could at this years Tiomila (due to sickness). Although we are not contenders for the top places at this years Jukola we have strong possibilites to make the top 10 if everything goes smoothly. I visited the Jukola venue today to familarize myself with the area and it looks like it will be a very demanding Jukola even for the best teams. Anything is possible.

3days to Jukola...

Turku (FIN)

Arrived back in my old home town Turku flying via Zurich and Stockholm. My night in Hong Kong went from better to better, after watching Australia's world cup match win I then boarded my longest flight (HK-Zurich) only to be told I had a new boarding pass issued.... JACKPOT... The seat number was now 8c and it was now blue in color and said Business class. Swiss Intl business class had the latest lay flat seats, complete with the hostess who puts sheets down before you sleep, table cloth for dinner, steak cooked to your specifications among other weird foods. I didnt know if I wanted to enjoy the deep sleep (which I had for 8hrs) or use the enterainment services. I can see why you pay 3 times as much to fly business, you take up more like 4places of regular seating. Not sure if I can ever fly Ecconomy again ;)

Although feeling very fresh arriving in Europe my bags went missing... price for flying Business class I guess. Easy day walking and laying in the sun around Turku, 2 Jukola specific sessions tommorow after my bags arrive. +27 and sunny.

4days to Jukola...
