High Dam orienteering - 31/39 + some retirees!
One of the most physical and most technical areas I've orienteered on. I felt a bit nervous this morning! 4 years ago at the British Champs here I took 2hrs55, happy to beat that today (a slightly shorter course). Took it steady and the plan was to take safe routes. Knew it was going to hot and hard so took some fuel and 500ml of water. Had some water after 50 mins, a gel on the way to 13 (quite a slow climb then faffed on top), more water, some jelly babies and more water.
Northern Champs but not eligible as a Southerner!
2 - route choice could have been better, hadn't noticed the path parallel to the wall. A bit far from the line, but executing the safe option.
8 - maybe slow due to flagging up the hill?
9 - decided to go over a hill rather than contour on the path. Not sure why I changed the plan then made things fit until I ended up at a crag/set of steps. Change in terrain may have influenced?
11 - could have gone up the straighter reentrant, didn't spot the around path route option. On the back foot post mistake perhaps?
13 - slow up the open hill, taking on food and water. Flagging a bit. Then didn't have a solid plan just contoured round and then messed around struggling to make the fenced enclosure fit. Should have gone via the enclosure and attacked off it
20 - poor bearing
23 - no clear attackpoint and plan have to attack. Just headed in, was pretty close but lost time reading the circle
28 - flagging, took on my some extra food on the hill climb. Original plan was to skirt it to the south but changed my mind. Contoured around the first hill, probably just tired because it wasn't that big a hill (5m + form line). Added distance then very slow up the open hill.
30 - poor direction/making it up as I went. Fortunately easy catching feature
