| Triora - Vicoforte, last day of our Tour. Still felt quite strong, although achilles was bothering me again. Corsin was pushing quite hard on the uphills, seems that only after 25 hours of training he seems to wake up (or we just get tired...).
Spent the night in a hotel in an old monestary. In total, the tour was about 1000km long with 18'000m of uphill. Even though I couldn't pile up the kms as I wanted, as I was recovering from a flu and had some problems with the achilles, I'm very satisfied with my 530km and 12'000m. This was a really great week that put some power into the legs again! Good start for building a good shape till the summer!

| Ventimiglia - Triora.
Totally underestimated the mountains of Liguria. Neverending mountain roads, only up and down, like in Corsica. Today was an original Caluori Adventure Tours day: In the end, we had planned to cross a pass called Passo Garazzo, 1800m high, on a small road which was of course marked on our road map of northern Italy. However, after some km, the aphalt stopped and it was only a gravel road. Trusting in the map (which is something you can do when you're in Switzerland, but certainly not in Italy!!! I should have known...) and the numerous road signs, we continued until it was basically just a small, rocky mountain road. But as we were already quite high up (and there was no way to turn the car...), we just continued on with our road bikes on the perfect bike trail. I didn't think it was possible to do such a thing with a road bike, at least without any flat tires. But even less did I think it's possible to do this with a car designed for the German Autobahn... We managed to cross the pass, but on the way down on the other side we got stuck in the snow and so there was no other way than to go back. 4 hours after we had left Triora, we were back there, ready to spend the night. Check out the movie of our epic fight on my webpage.

| St-Auban - Ventimiglia (Italia).
Felt good! For the first time this year, I felt power in the legs. Did the Col de Turini (1300m uphill) in the end. As motivation, Gmür was reading the book of Jan Ullrich during the week. At one point towards the end of his victorious Tour de France 1997, Ulle is really dead and his teammates have to motivate him to fight to the end. So one of them shouts at him "Quäl dich, du Sau!!"... 3km before the top of Turini, Gmür remembers these words and starts pushing himself hard. Well, he wasn't the only one feeling pain... I was probably over the anaerobic threshold, but at least I beat him ;-) So it's a good sign that there is still some fighting spirit left in me! And as for Simon, he was suddenly feeling a bit cold, so he had to put on a jacket... When driving the car in the last part of the tour, through the mountains of Nizza, it became clear to me why Lance Armstrong prepared his Tour de Frances down there: a huge number of small mountain roads with almost no traffic, really beautiful mountains and forests. Later, I realized that I had actuallly driven across the Col de la Madone, which has his course for testing his shape. It's 13km long and 900m up, the record is 30.47... I just wonder what kind of fuel he was using, because with plain unleaded gasoline it takes about 25min...

| Greoux-les-Bains - Saint-Auban.
Traversed the Grand Canyon du Verdon. Very impressive!! Lots of up and down the whole day, quite tough. But had some pains in my Achilles tendon, so I drove the car for a larger part. Problems with my achilles have always bothered me when doing a lot of cycling. I just have to hold myself back and not push too hard, then it is under control. But in general, I fell better every day, the power is returning. Have found a very nice small hotel up in the mountains where we'll take a day off tomorrow.

| Sault - Mont Ventoux - Sault - Greoux-les-Bains.
The first longer tour this year. We started out with the legendary Mont Ventoux, where legends have been born and heros have fallen. The mountain is pretty impressive, as the last 6 km you're basically riding through a rocky desert, and the road just gets steeper and steeper. An the view is really great, probably you can even see the Mediterranean if the air is clear. From a physical point of view, I was expecting it to be tougher, apart from the last kms, the road is quite flat. But I guess after 200km and in scorching heat, pushing really hard, things may look different... and mentally, it is special, as you can always see the top, and it looks really close, but is actually still very far. Check out some pics on www.denissteinemann.ch, I will post them this week.

| Die - Sault.
Did the first part of the tour, as I planned to save some power in the first few days. Again excellent weather, great nature! Still felt out of power, especially when Simon and Martin were pushing a bit harder on the uphills. At least on the first 50km, Corsin was always speaking of all the new records we would set this week... Drove the car in the second half of the tour. When I was waiting for the others on the last pass, I got a call from Corsin, begging me to pick him up on the bottom of the pass (which was actually called Col de l'homme mort :-)))), as he could hardly sit on the bike anymore. That incident made him a bit more humble for the next couple of days ;-)

| Start of our Tour de Provence & Liguria together with Corsin Caluori, Martin Gmür and Simon Seger. Packed everything into the Caluori Opel Zafira and drove down to Grenoble.
Very nice weather already, passed the maps of World Cup '96 Finals in Villars de Lans (Tom Bührer won the long distance, first world cup victory for a swiss, I think). Took it very easy, as I was still out of power from 10 days of flu and stress. Grenoble - Die.

| extensive intervals with Hannes. 8'/6'/4'/2'. Röchel, röchel, still felt tired and without energy. No chance against Hannes, but I didn't push hard as it seemed contraproductive.
The flu seems to have taken more energy out of my body than I thought, and having to work hard in the office this week isn't exactly the kind of thing that's bringing it back.

| long run, Bonstetten-Aeugsterberg and back, one of the classics of when I was still living in Bonstetten. Lots of uphill, muddy ground, tough. Felt (and was) slow, had no power in my legs at all. Cold ok.
