Orienteering 1:10:00 [3]

Saturday Mar 29

Event: ASC Galaxy & Canberra Cup

Orienteering race 17:00 [5]
UC sprint. Not the best run. made a few stuupid mistakes. was at least a minute off where i would have liked to be.
Orienteering race 19:00 [5]
Relays at Radford. Ripper format and i really like the orienteering here. ran with Rob macdonald (i was the 'man' in the team).

Mass start was hectic as always. Pace pretty hot leading lazy dave thru the first couple of controls before he decided he shouldnt be behind a big slow man like myself. Finished about 45seconds off the pack i guess.
Rob ran well and put me out in good possy. Mistake on 3 and robbie and dave caught me. rest of the loop was easy with lots similar to the first so it was just head down and max suffering.

Went pretty well as a team but unfortunately rob had a silly mp on both loops. good lesson on not forgetting the basics in such an intense format for everyone running today.
Running warm up/down 40:00 [3]
various w/u and w/d thru the day

have this weird hacking cough since the UC race. think it might be the cold canberra air not agreeing with a soft sydney boy!

Wednesday Mar 26

Cycling 41:00 [3]
beaut morning
Cycling 1:05:00 [3]
home plus some faffing around.

pretty uneventful till a sweet ferrari came past me then absolutely took off. Never seen a car disappear as quickly as this thing did. Just shows what a couple of 100K and a small penis can do for you.

Tuesday Mar 25

Cycling 40:00 [3]
commute.

The added complications of needed lights, textbooks and change of clothes on top of the usual meant i forgot my towel today. I am a big Goose. luckily having a T-shirt and thermal meant the tshirt could be sacrificed and avoid the unpleasant paper towel debacle of last week
Cycling 35:00 [3]
home from class. fanged it on the pacific hwy.

Dari had made the greatest lasagne ever.

Monday Mar 24

Orienteering 50:00 [3]
day 3.

orienteering OK but just felt shattered and pretty down on myself so pulled out at spectator control. about 30mins O + w/u.

Sunday Mar 23

Orienteering race 2:25:00 [3]
day 2 classic. Pretty tough course. I knew i was going to struggle so took it easy, tried to navigate clean and made it ok. Not one of my best runs but pleasing to finish when id been considering not even starting.

Saturday Mar 22

Orienteering 52:00 [3]
day 1. ordinary run. too many mistakes and got a twig in my eye which took me a while to get out.

Friday Mar 21

Event: Australian Easter Three Days and Prologue

Orienteering 17:04 [3]
prologue sprint in dubbo zoo. nice and clean run. pleased. not much speed in the legs but thats life.
Running 50:00 [3]
various warm up/warm down jogs/runs

Wednesday Mar 19

Cycling 2:00:00 [3]
commute. nice morning.

wasnt in a hurry to get home so rode through kirrabili, neut bay cremorne willoughby, camoray etc on the way home.

bought a new road bike frame today. have new wheels and groupset already in the mail....SWEEEET!

Tuesday Mar 18

Cycling 40:00 [3]
ride home after class. pleasantly suprised my bike stayed in one piece.

Monday Mar 17

Cycling 55:00 [3]
decided to ride to work this morning, shouldnt have.

First flat came just before artamon oval. not a very happy chappy. managed to get to the rocks before my 2nd flat, very very unhappy chappy. walked last km or so to work and of course i forgot to take my towel down to the showers. one of those mornings.

Felt like a massive chump taking my back wheel home on the train. probably looked like one as well

Sunday Mar 16

AR (aroc 12hr) 9:00:00 [3]
ripper day out. 2nd mixed with Ben and Mace

HQ at glebe park. quick O section on mt ainslie before making the first of the fitness first classes at 930. this was a hoot. 40 odd adventure races trying to do body attack. were on a pretty tight schedule round the northside cos of closing times for various checkpoints. pancake making at ainslie, yellow sub checkpoint the straight out to belco for tenpin bowling (Ben is THE man!) and water slides. MTB rally on Bruce ridge. Lots of teams said they had problems with this. We breezed through no problems and i thought the instructions we were following were perfect.

gunned it along GDE (maybe it is useful after all) to mitchell for rock climbing. over to watson for take 2 (kinda like scrabble). down to merci college for some random cooking/cleaning. Back to HQ for a quick iron gut challenge (ingredients: Banana for B, Gatorade G, Solo S and Red bull!).

Went over to tree trimming just behind CSIRO. never thought we'd fit this in so a nice bonus. rode thru some 3 corner jacks. I flatted but bens superior tyre tecnology saved him from a repair in the now friggin warm afternoon sun.

Sth side loop to canberra grammar (old school!) for a quiz. picked up 2 checkpoints on red hill before heading to mt taylor for orienteering. I stuggled here but we got thru. ben had some cramp demons heading back into town and we were seriously slowing down by now. Decided to head straight to dicko pool to do our 1km swim. did most of it with a can of soft drink in hand to try and re-hydrate.

Back to ANU to do the O-crossword there. I was completely useless by this stage and walked most of it. answered as much of the crossword as we could, i had a spew and we decided we didnt have enough time left to do justice to the kayaking so headed to the finish with 45 mins spare.

I dont think i had recovered from 6ft. Felt good on the bike which thankfully we were on for most of the day. Running, even the very first leg, just felt like massive strugglesvill. 3 days is going to be interesting. I feel like i really need a weekend off for R&R

Thursday Mar 13

Running 50:00 [3]
cruisey run down to two creeks. nice afternoon.

suprised how good the legs feel given i only expected to be walking comfortably by thursday

Wednesday Mar 12

Cycling 40:00 [3]
commute. finally sydney is getting some consistently nice weather.

Still feeling flattish but stronger every day.

Never ceases to amaze me how much of a tourist i feel in sydney. It seems eveyone is an international. They probably pay shit loads of money to travel to australia, walk across the bridge and gawk at the opera house. I get to ride across the bridge and gawk at the opera house for free, and twice a day

Cycling 55:00 [3]
my back wheel finally gave in on me. I was only thinking how much better my bike felt after taking it apart and putting it together for the car trip to the bluey's on the weekend. Not as dramatic a breakage as my last wheel which basically disintegrated 40km from Jindibyne and forced me to hitch back into town.

Oh well, it was probably time for some new bits
Cycling 45:00 [3]
rolled down to lane cove weir after getting home to see if my MTB was workng fo the 12hr on the weekend. The good news was it was working, the bad news was it was all uphill on the way home and i was dead after not having enough lunch.

Tuesday Mar 11

Cycling 1:15:00 [3]
commute.
in with dari. nice to stretch the legs.

had class late in the city so just rode straight up the hwy

Monday Mar 10

Note
(rest day)
felt sorry for myself so caught the train today.

still struggling a bit to walk normally. things below my knees just arent quite right.

Sunday Mar 9

Cycling 50:00 [3]
recovery ride.

rolled round katoomba a bit before riding the cliff road round to leura for a morning coffee then headed straight back to K'ba.

they sure dont make roads flat here. I came across a little pinch early on and almost didnt get up it. got up to 30kph (downhill) at one stage but decided that was way too fast and backed it down to 15 again.

legs tired and useless but suprisingly not too sore.
walking 1 [3]
met a german chick at the hostel last night and since i had nothing to do for the day we went and did a few cruisey walks. one at 3 sisters. did a loop at leura cascades. last one was at wentworth falls down to some waterfalls. pretty steep in some sections. she wanted to keep going to do a big loop at the falls so i just walked back up with 5 random swedes i met.

good fun weekend in the mtns despite the 'run'

Saturday Mar 8

Running (6ft track) 6:15:00 [3]45 km (8:20 / km) +1600m 7:05 / km
I should NEVER have started today. Period.
I think deep down I knew it but just didn?t have the discipline to make the call.

After 5km I knew I?d made the wrong call and it was going to be a long day. By 15km at the river crossing I was struggling despite trying to look after myself on the way. I rated myself 0 chance of finishing. I was finished. Walking was an effort and the prospect of 30km of it wasn?t an option. At every aid station from here for the next 15km I asked what are the chances of getting a lift out. I would have said yes in an instant but everytime I got the same answer of unless its an emergency you?ll have to wait till the entire field has passed thru. So I kept plodding away trying to get to the top of the climb in one piece.

Really wanted to pull out at the top of pluvi (27km to go) but with the same response I decided to see how the black range treated me and keep going.

Something happened to me here that has never happened. I forgot why I love doing stuff outdoors and all I could think about was how shit this was and how I wanted to be anywhere but here.

Then I realised how disappointed I would be to have pulled out and that im not the only person around here struggling. I cheered up, started smiling, started feeling better?..and started running!

Once I?d decided to try and finish I stopped stressing about how slow id been going the last 15km and got on with the job. I knew I was going to run a rubbish time but that no longer mattered, this had stopped being about time a long time ago.

I felt proud to get a finish after it seeming an impossibility. Pretty tough day out and I will need to seriously rethink my motives if I am ever to do this run again. I?ve suffered way too much over that course to go straight back with the same frame of mind.

Interesting day all up.

Friday Mar 7

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]
slow commute today

Thursday Mar 6

Note
(rest day)
(another) rest day.

will need it for weekend.

had to drive to office today. pretty interesting. first and last time hopefully.

Wednesday Mar 5

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]
commute. everyone seemed intent on running me over or being run over. stupid sydney people.
Cycling 1:05:00 [3]
caught up with some dude on the pacific hwy riding home who had jumped on the pretentious single-speed bandwagon. Turned out to be Dari so rode home with him. He seems to have a bike for every occasion so we had to stop for him to change bikes before heading out on mona vale rd to terry hills for a little loop there.

Now anyone who has every ridden with me knows i like nothing more than putting the head down and tail up and working my arse off along a nice flat piece of bituman, which is true of course. But bloody oath, we got overtaken by a dude riding back towards st ives who was on an absolute mission. couldnt help myself but to jump on at 50+kph and see what it must feel like riding behind me....it feels fuckin awesome!

felt much closer to human today and seem to have almost recovered from monday/tuesdays cold. am hopeful of at least making the start line of 6ft on the weekend. making the finish line will be another mater but one thing at a time.

Monday Mar 3

Cycling 40:00 [3]
commute
Cycling 40:00 [3]
woke up feeling so crap i wasnt going to ride but hoped it might make me feel better. didn't really but i didnt feel worse. got overtaken by some keeno on a mtb on pacific hwy. damaged my pride a bit but i got him back.

going to be a real easy week
Squash 40:00 [3]
got done.

Sunday Mar 2

Running 30:00 [3]
can't remember having such a bad hangover. sub party celebrations took their toll. quiet recovery 'run' to try and get some life back into me.

Saturday Mar 1

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]
didnt take a watch so not much idea about timings here. run was out at felled timbers.

maybe 15/20 mins warm up jog into to the forest to get to the start.

3 X 1.5km short loops run in different orders by everyone, then a final 3km approx loop. got a stick straight through the bottom of my shoe about 100m into the first one. pulled it but worried it had punctured the skin as my foot hurt bad. got thru the loop and had a look. only a bit of blood and the cut not too big so did the rest.

cut the final loop short a little. pretty tired.
