| Running through the woods looking for a lost orienteerer. Not sure of the distance covered. On the way to picking up controls saw him in the road and told him that we were picking up controls the time was 407 PM. He pointed out to me that there were two controls right over that way to pick up. I said I am dropping someone off right now to pick them up and I am going up the road to get more. I would not see him again for four hours. I picked up the controls and went back to the parking area and waited for others to return. This is one I found out that this man had not returned that was running the orange course. We waited a bit; his other OTC classmates had returned at this point. One man drove down roads looking for him and I headed back to the last control he needed to punch. When I saw him he needed just one more control and then in. Checked this area; thought he might have made a parallel error to another stream; nothing. Headed back. Took the car and went to another spot with one of the army OTCs, parked and we each headed into the woods about 200m apart. We went into the woods for 10 mins and then back out again, alone, still nothing. The area of this last control was bounded by roads-one paved the rest dirt. I asked all three of them if he would cross over the paved road and they said no. Back to camp. I stayed at camp alone as everyone else looked including my husband. Again people returned and he was not back- time to call in the Marines. (We are on a military base) They sent up one marine in a truck. During this time Tim Good went to the logged out area thinking maybe he was confused by this and Sid went down the road in his car. When the marine arrived he wanted me to round up everyone so that the only person in the woods is the lost person. People came back and the only person missing was Tim; I tried to find him could not. So I came back, at this point we were quickly losing light. I drove back and there is my husband standing in the road with his hands up and said he is back. The marine went up the road and gave Tim a ride back. This is what happened.... This man went to go to the last control and could not find it he so tried to come in and thought from the map that he was looking for a paved road, well he came across a road, but it was dirt so he kept going and going. He ended up walking to a lake, that by straight line measurement, was five miles away. Yes, you read that right! At this point he ran into some civilians and he asked them where is the lake on my map and showed them the map. Luckily, they knew where to bring him. He got into their car and he was driven all the way around back to the parking lot arriving at 8:15PM. My husband, at registration, tried to talk them out of running orange and start with white. They would not, saying they had training and told him, "Don't worry about us." |
