Sunday Dec 31

Hiking 2:30:00 [1]13.0 mi (11:32 / mi)
Mixture of running and walking on the AT. Ran when I could and walked when the trails was somewhat steep or very rocky. Actually had some nice views of the river. Saw lots of deer a couple of foxes and no humans. Light rain towards the end. Pace is a guess based on one measured area that was 1.9 miles that I covered in 19 mins I figured I was somewhat fast through this section.

Saturday Dec 30

Running 1:00:00 [1]7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
Opted to sleep and take it easy running along the Potomac utilizing trails.
Weightlifting 1:00:00 [1]
Hurried and went to the gym since they will be closed for the next two days. Ended with 100 sit-ups.

Friday Dec 29

Running 40:00 [1]5.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Easy lunch time run.

Wednesday Dec 27

Running 56:00 [2]7.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Went to the MVA to renew my license and DOH! the kids are on break so they are at the MVA to get learner's permit etc. First I had to wait in one line just to get a number. I got #88 and was pointed to a place to wait. They were only waiting on #42 so I knew with only three windows open I had a long wait I was figuring about two hours. At first I just read for 20 mins and gave up on that and went out for a run. I ran part way on the roads until I reached Seneca Creek Park and ran on the trails. Luckily before going back to my car once I returned I checked the number they were serving and it was #87! Yikes! I hurried, picked up my sweats and made it back with a couple of minutes to spear just enough time to put on the sweats. What a way to multi-task!
Weightlifting 1:00:00 [2]
Left the MVA; it only took five minutes to get my license which is good for another five years of driving. I got my picture taken with my Stone Cat Ale shirt on. Now to the gym for part two of my workout. Thinking of running the MMT on Saturday and cutting the planned group workout of 40 miles to something more reasonable. Ended with 100 sit ups and 40 girlie push ups.

Tuesday Dec 26

Running 40:00 [1]5.0 mi (7:59 / mi)

Sunday Dec 24

Running 39:15 [1]4.9 mi (8:01 / mi)
Since the gym was closed today limited options on exercise so decided to run around Burke Lake. Broght my trail shoes, but after looking at the trail used my road trainers. Flat trail around a beautiful lake. Crowded the whole way around so constantly weaving around people and dogs. Took it easy since this is the first time running since the marathon stayed plenty warm with shorts and singlet.

Saturday Dec 23

Weightlifting 1:00:00 [2]

Friday Dec 22

swimming 45:00 [1]1.5 mi (29:59 / mi)
This time put a little more energy into my workout. Swam some did some kicking and pulls.

Wednesday Dec 20

Weightlifting 45:00 [2]
Time was at a premium today. Did not want to be a slug two days in a row so got motivated and lifted until the gym closed. Now that I am recovered from the marathon gained some strength both with my legs and upper body. Ended up getting through all of my lifts since it was almost deserted- only a couple of marines.

Tuesday Dec 19

Note
A man I passed around mile 24 in the Tucson marathon had a heart attack about 10-15 mins later and died at the hospital. This is the first time I know of someone having a heart attack in a race that was in this good shape and had trained extensively. He was only 40 and had run several marathons and ultras. He collasped at about 25.8 miles into the race. After I finished I saw he collasped and thought it was from dehydration. Several EMTs were around him at this point and an ambulance was already on the scene.

Monday Dec 18

swimming 30:00 [1]

Sunday Dec 17

Orienteering 1:18:21 [1]*** 4.5 km (17:25 / km) +45m 16:35 / km
10c
Walked the brown course at Greenbelt Park. Edged out Sid Sachs by 20 secs.

Saturday Dec 16

Weightlifting 1:05:00 [2]
did a lot of lifting especially for my legs. Seem to feel fine able to lift my usual weight. The squat machine was broken so used an different machine. used some of the upper body workout I did the other day. Ended with 100 sit-ups.

Thursday Dec 14

swimming 40:00 [1]1.0 mi (40:01 / mi)
Mixture of strokes including 4 X 100 free in 135-140. I did not use my legs much swimming these so made them a little slower. Did some kicking also. Tried to do some fast 50 breastroke just catching the person in front of me so had to switch to dog paddle. Some of this time is just hanging on the wall in between intervals.

Wednesday Dec 13

Weightlifting 1:00:00 [1]
Lifted mostly for upper body trying out some of the new machines the gym purchased. They are real nice and one-pectoral back works the upper back a lot. Lifted some for my legs with very light weight. Feel the weight a lot just the massage last night helped me feel better. Had another good night of sleep so caught up and back on EST.

Sunday Dec 10

Note
Tucson Marathon
Running race 3:17:53 [5]26.22 mi (7:32 / mi) vdot: 47.8
Finished 10th women and 106th out of 1149 finishers and fourth Masters. With the age-grade ended up 26th overall. Yes, the race was brutal. The downhill running was great just the 20-30 mph headwinds that I encountered from mile 10-25 were tough. After most of the field had left me far behind- this time I was in about 600th place I passed people after mile 8 and all the way to the finish line. Tried to stay behind people to block the wind just the field has slowed so much just ran by. My half way split was 1:35:12. The splits on the web page are inaccurate. Thought the winds would not last that long as we were dropping elevation figured the mountains would slow the wind speed. At times the wind was so strong that when I broke contact with the road the wind pushed me into other runners so I was hitting someone in the legs, upper body or stepped on their foot. The women's winner already qualified for the Olympic trials and she won with a time of 2:59. Beautiful mountain views the whole way in.

Saturday Dec 9

Walking 1:00:00 [0]
walked around in Sabino Canyon looking for critters. Saw lots of rabbits, birds and two road runners. Walked extremely slow so not to be tired for the next day. Just to perfect of a day to stay indoors. Sat and rested a couple of times in the shade and drank plenty of water. Also went on the tram that took you around the park-it was full of old people.

Friday Dec 8

Running 32:00 [1]4.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Ran easy to stretch out my legs. Ran a couple of strides. Picked up my number for the race. There is a marathon and relay race starting at the same time. It has been windy for the last couple of days, but the forecast is for sun, no wind and mid 40's when the race starts.

Wednesday Dec 6

Running 50:00 [1]
Ran easy on the trails. In places that climbed a lot just walked these parts so not sure of the distance. Very pretty area watched the sun set and ran back. At times this area has big horn sheep, but no luck today. Plenty of big eared rabbits.

Tuesday Dec 5

Running 32:00 [1]4.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
Just ran this morning to keep my legs loose. Not enough time for the jacuzzi in the AM will have to wait for the night.

Monday Dec 4

Running tempo 19:00 [4]3.0 mi (6:19 / mi)
Ran at marathon pace. Had the bus driver use the odometer to measure three miles plus used the marathon map also. Still not sure how accurate the distance is since the road was recently resurfaced so all of the mile markers are covered. Thought I was moving somewhat easy just did not know my speed until I finished. This was not a continous effort since I had to pause in two intersections for about 15 seconds before crossing. The road is very busy so only one lane will be for the runners and you will have to contend with traffic in the neighboring lanes. Only had to jump over one small snake in the road.
Running 27:00 [1]3.5 mi (7:43 / mi)
ran back easy. Had a slight amount of climb but the wind was pushing me along also. Had the wind to deal with on the way out at about 10mph hopefully this late in the race I can run behind someone. Plan to go to the jacuzzi again. Temps in the low 70's with full sun.

Sunday Dec 3

Running 1:35:00 [1]12.0 mi (7:54 / mi)
Ran on the latter part of the marathon course. It is a high speed road with a large shoulder. Somewhat windy plus the sun here is strong. Temps only in the low 70's seems like the whole USA is on the cold side. It is funny to listen to the locals talk about how "cold" it is today. Plan to go in the jacuzzi afterwards. Back feels unusually good even with all of the traveling yesterday and waiting around. My legs feel only OK hope they feel fresher by next week. Took a catnap since no way I could stay awake during the evening session.

Saturday Dec 2

Note
weight:120lbs
After all of the traveling did not run. The flight into Dallas was on time just the flight to Tucson was delayed by over one hour due to the storms yesterday. By the time I reached Tucson the sun was setting. Wanted to run during the lay-over just airport security said I could not run in the area. Did some stretching for about 15 mins and watched the Army- Navy game. Weighed myself in at the airport this is weight with clothes and some stuff I was carrying.

Friday Dec 1

Running 48:00 [1]6.0 mi (7:59 / mi)
took it easy since the race is about one week away. Added six strides in the latter part of my run.
Weightlifting 55:00 [2]
Lifted weights adding in some new lifts. Able to add some weight for a couple of them. My back is feeling somewhat better this routine seems to be helping it. Plan not to lift until after the marathon. Did 100 sit ups at the end.
