Orienteering 13:41 [5] 3.1 km (4:25 / km)

This race was rather disapointing. I took all of the right routes, only made one error which cost me about 3 seconds coming out of #12 to the south of the olive green instead of turning around. I was still well back in my heat, so apparently running intevals are actually a good idea if you want to be able to run fast.

Basically, this race was 95% about running speed, and had almost no navigational or route-choice challenge. It was still run, but I wish this had happened yesterday when the field was more separate, since with how it worked out only running speed mattered to get into the final.

I ended up 6 seconds outside the final, in 8th/10 for the round.

The Forked Final! And it was awesome(ly painful)!

The forking meant you actually had to navigate, which was great. Awesome area, nice and technical, especially all the pathways in the forked loops around 15-22. I honestly wish that the Sunday morning event was forked as well.

I made a few mistakes on this race, which cost me a fair bit.

First mistake was coming out of #8, I ran south around the garden, then went north of the building, then back south to #9 (I took the S route) instead of going north or south. Indecision hurts.

Also made a minor mistake on #13, running south of the building rather than north, losing around 10 steps to Siri on this leg. At 13 the entire heat of 5 punched within 3 seconds of each other! This was so awesome!

I made a mistake on 16, thinking I could get out the north end of the pool, so ended up running all the way around the impassable water in a clockwise direction....

Mistake on 20, following Graeme out of 19. The rest was perfect, spiked everything, but just didn't have the running speed on the legs from 24 onwards. If the course had gone from 24 back to the tennis courts I think it would have been better. It would have been within sprint specification (less than 15 minute winning time) and avoided the tacked on running legs of 25-29.

Still tons of fun, and a big thank you to Patrick and everyone who helped out for an amazing weekend!
