Armchair-O 35:00 [0]

Had to change up the plan today with the addition of a JWOC team meeting late this morning preventing the planned mapping trip. Maybe tomorrow if studying goes well this evening.

This was the JWOC team meeting this morning - only around 5 of us and Jeff showed up, but we learned some initial info and did some good map study of the Hungary training maps and Czech Team GPS tracking from their camp.
4 PM

Running 59:44 intensity: (16:49 @1) + (34:55 @2) + (8:00 @3) 9.44 km (6:20 / km) +214m 5:41 / km
ahr:138 max:162

Easy afternoon run before dinner.

Biking 26:35 intensity: (24:10 @1) + (2:25 @2) 5.25 km (5:04 / km) +90m 4:40 / km
ahr:113 max:145

Easy ride down the Academy Hill downhill MTB trail for the first time. Going over a log that had been turned into a drop I bottomed out the bike and dug my front chain ring into the log, went over and landed straight on my head, and then rolled over onto my arm. Somehow I came away from that with no damage to the bike, no damage to me except a small scratch on my leg. Unfortunately, I landed on my Garmin, and the pin holding half the strap onto the watch bent so much that half the strap detached from the watch. Going to need to find a replacement pin, since I can no longer fix the watch to my arm.

Felt fine, head didn't hurt but did some of the concussion testing type stuff with myself, then continued my ride out along Quail Ridge trail to close to the end where I hid my bike and backpack behind some trees and locked the wheels together.

Orienteering 1:16:07 intensity: (22:01 @1) + (24:14 @2) + (29:52 @3) 7.32 km (10:24 / km) +408m 8:08 / km
ahr:144 max:169

Includes around 5 min running to the start, and around 5 min running from finish back to the bike.

Orienteering on a auto-generated (pre-processed by the City, don't have access to the raw LiDAR or a DEM unfortunately, but still pretty good contours) 5m contours map with a few roads and trails traced in so I didn't run into somebody's backyard. Some absolutely gorgeous terrain, a shame there isn't a proper map of it and that I think it is mostly on private property. Tons of climb through the first 3/4 of the course (almost half a km of vertical), so was feeling pretty darn tired towards the end. Was pretty happy with my rough navigation, just within some of the more technical control circles was not very accurate - but I'm mostly blaming that on the map today due to the lack of detail on it. Having just proper contours showing what's between the 5m intervals would have bee fine, but entire 4m hills were totally missing at times.

Had to skip the first control because of a herd of cows parked right where I had planned the control to be, so had to run around them a ways. Also skipped one of the later controls - it was a bit of a spree-slope with a lot of loose rock and didn't really feel like it was safe to risk on my own for little navigational benefit.

Biking 22:51 intensity: (14:49 @1) + (3:50 @2) + (4:12 @3) 4.92 km (4:39 / km) +125m 4:07 / km
ahr:130 max:165

Easy ride back home. It was really nice not having an exam today.

Streching/Rolling 15:00 [0]

4 done (got home at 9:30pm, and am feeling rather tired, so not running tonight), only 1 to go on Wednesday next week - so training is into full swing starting tomorrow!

Training Plan Until the End of Exams Next Wednesday:
Saturday:
- 20min ride - to a contours only map - stash bike in the woods somewhere.
- 1.25-2.0 hours - orienteering on auto-generated contours only map (the only sort of forest map I seem to have in Kelowna at the moment unfortunately). Will set the course in the morning I guess.
- 20min ride - home.
Sunday:
- 40min ride to downtown church - lock up bike.
- 15min ride from church to Waterfront OART maps.
- 3 hours (give or take 2 hours depending on how much I want to study) - Fieldchecking a good chunk of one of the maps.
- 70min (guessing on time for this one) - Ride Home through Knox Mountain
Monday:
- 60 min Easy Run
Tuesday
- run intervals - 4x5 minutes maybe, somewhere on Quail Ridge (anybody interested?)

Streching/Rolling 35:00 [0]

Back is super tight from all this hunched over studying. Working out some knots with tennis balls and a small roller.

Note

3 down. 2 to go.

And another one tomorrow. I'm getting rather drained to be honest, and switching from a 9am exam today to a 6pm exam to borrow is gonna need a massive swing in my sleep cycle.

Note

Umm, so didn't get out training today. P chem final tomorrow is gonna kill me (or at least my grades). This is how I got through the day of non-stop studying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag2Ihnwcb0c

Running 1:02:41 intensity: (1:55 @0) + (12:17 @1) + (18:51 @2) + (27:11 @3) + (2:27 @4) 10.0 km (6:16 / km) +367m 5:18 / km
ahr:146 max:176

Two down, three to go.

I didn't feel quite as dead energy wise after this exam as after the last one, so got on dinner at a decent time, and had time to run as the sun was setting. It was another absolutely splendid evening, with just a few clouds in the sky, so I decided I would put the GoPro in a good spot on top of a hill, and get a good 45-55 minute timelapse of the sun setting while I ran. An absolutely fabulous plan, I was very happy with myself throughout the entire run looking forward to seeing the amazing footage. Got back to the camera five minutes from the end of my run, and it had fallen over and was happily filming the grass. I hadn't secured it to anything really, just balanced on a two legged mount in the dirt, so I guess a light gust of wind must have blown it over. Didn't even get a minute of footage out of it. Might try again tomorrow if the weather is similar.

Also stopped on top of the western bit of Academy Hill to play around with a 10 second timer on my phone, and got some good pictures.

A similar view to the one the GoPro should have been taking a timelapse of.

The one time the 10 second timer lucked out and I got caught running through frame
Wasn't much of a quality run, but I really enjoyed it and it was a great de-stresser to get me in the mood for studying for my next two exams.

Running 17:27 intensity: (9 @1) + (6:52 @2) + (10:15 @3) + (11 @4) 4.55 km (3:50 / km) +162m 3:15 / km

Quick night time run to burn off some energy before bed and to hopefully solidify some more latin american history.

1 down 4 to go.
