Running 1:30:00 [3] 20.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Orange tri shoes

Didn't have class today so I could make it to the Tuesday 'tempo' runs. I thought more people would show up who ran the half marathon, but two fresh guys did. They wanted to do 16 miles, so I started running with them to see how I would feel. I turned around at about 6.5 miles in because i could tell I was still hurting from the race on Sunday. It turned out to be a good call because the last two miles I was getting that familiar feeling in my legs from near the end of Marathons. Feeling the heavy legs was good training for the marathons coming up in about 5 months.

Big Sur Half Marathon

My first non-trail (road) half marathon.

This race was lots of fun and I am really happy with my effort. While warming up I felt a cramp coming on and I was nervous it would come up during the race. It did after the 2nd mile and stayed with me until 7 or 8 miles. The whole time I kept thinking about controlling my form and trying to use deep breaths to fight off the cramp. I think that combined with a gel pack + water helped turn it around for me. On the way back we were fighting against wind but I actually sped up. The last 2 miles I left the guys I was running with behind and finished with my two fastest miles for the race. One of my goals was to negative split.

It was a great feeling to fight through a cramp in such a long race and end up with a result I can be happy with.

Not to take away from it, but I did run a faster time during the first half of CIM than I did today (1:20 vs 1:24). But considering how inconsistent I have been with my training, I am happy with where I am at. I think I can build off of this and run well this April for Boston2BigSur. Time to get the miles in!
