Running 35:00 [2] 5.7 km (6:08 / km) +100m 5:39 / km
shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Assisting at the novice event. Combined shadowing with hill repetition (up and down until they arrive at the nearby control) and control retrieval.

Real Orienteering race (Diamond Hill) 1:02:30 [3] *** 9.0 km (6:57 / km) +220m 6:11 / km
ahr:139 spiked:18/18c weight:80kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Straight to the scatter O after the novice series. Due to the slow group I was shadowing, this was a tight schedule. The scatter-O was on Diamond Hill. It was cool enough to be safe, but too warm to be pleasant. I very quickly decied that this mass-start sprint idea had hairs on it, and slowed down for the rest of the course. Turns out many other made the same decision.,

Pseud-O race 57:00 [4] * 10.32 km (5:31 / km) +75m 5:20 / km
ahr:150 max:170 spiked:17/17c shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Good fun for Pseud-O. Quite a few controls were off the streets and in the more interesting terrain. Kept the heart rate up! Almost exactly the same speed as last week. One second per k slower. Probably because I slowed down towards the end as I had 3 minutes up my sleeve. Missed 3 controls and one was gettable, I just fogot to take the turn for it.

Running 48:11 [3] 8.2 km (5:53 / km) +50m 5:42 / km
ahr:131 max:144 shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Run with Jools after work. Quite a novelty to run in the evening this summer.

Monday Feb 23, 2009 #

Running 40:00 [2] * 6.45 km (6:12 / km)
ahr:118 max:131 weight:79.8kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

More map checking on Crusoe heights. Not much more to do....

Sunday Feb 22, 2009 #

Back, core and achilles 10:00 [1]

Running 32:42 [2] * 5.0 km (6:32 / km) +75m 6:05 / km
weight:80.4kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

More street map making. Being a Bendigo street map, there was a good proportion of bushland in the run.

Back, core and achilles warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Back on the wagon. Back is complaining about lack of attention.

Thursday Feb 19, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2] 5.5 km (6:22 / km) +20m 6:15 / km

More field work for the Crusoe Heights map.
I'm beginning to wonder about Garmin products. Downloaded last nights Pseud-O without problems. But it wouldn't tunr on this morning, using either the on button or auto turn on via USB link. Wouldn't register recharge either. Stone cold DEAD. I have had it less than a year. My previous Forerunner lasted less than a year as well before it stopped talking to the outside world. I'm beginning to think they are CRAP.

Wednesday Feb 18, 2009 #

Pseud-O race 1:00:00 [4] * 11.3 km (5:19 / km)
spiked:17/17c weight:80.4kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

My first Pseud_o for the season. The greatest achievement was remembering that it was on. I just plain forgot the previous two events. Next best achievement was arriving back dead on time. Not a second late, not a second wasted, and I had to finish at full sprint for the last 300 metres.

Tuesday Feb 17, 2009 #

Running 52:35 [2] * 8.45 km (6:13 / km) +60m 6:01 / km
weight:80.6kg

More fieldworking 'Crusoe Heights' street map. Turn on the GPS and run. Its a reasonably efficient way to achieve two objectives at once.

Friday Feb 13, 2009 #

Running warm up/down 11:30 [2] 2.0 km (5:45 / km)
weight:80.8kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Running tempo 19:28 [5] 4.3 km (4:32 / km) +45m 4:18 / km
shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

It really was too warm for a lunch time run, but I had the 'couldn't be bothereds' this morning. Reasonably happy with the time considering.
A new thought for running in bush at the moment. Two people were arrested for being 'suspicious' in the bush in Gippsland. It hit the media. They were then released without charge. You wonder how trigger happy the locals will be with the phone pads if they see anyone driving/walking/running in the bush. Out particular interest in running through the bush seems weird to most people even in normal times.

Running 1:11:30 [3] 12.41 km (5:46 / km) +120m 5:30 / km
ahr:130 max:155 weight:79.8kg shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

Trying to make up for missing yesterday and the long run. Went up Durstons Road, and through the bush down Derwent Gully Road. The forest block was untouched, and friends with houses along Durstons road did not have to deal with fire, though judging by the equipment around, there was a period of worry. Came upon the fire damage at the other end. Nothing much left along Albert Street. Looks like it came racing through the southern part of New Saint Mungo forest. It was eerie. Turned around and came back straight away. Didn't linger. Must have ran hard to get out of the area, as my heart rate jumped from 130 to 155 at this stage. I must have been scared of being labelled a looter. There's a lot of angst around. Rumours are afoot of fire being started by a juvenile, as well as of looters around last night. Both rumours have been denied by police.

Note

Some views from the helicopter taken by Rob Price of DSE. These give a sense of how close in the fire got.

The QEO Oval, Rosalind Park and Tom Flood centre are in the foreground. The Hargreaves Mall (central Bendigo) is bottom left.

From Fire

We have been taking calls off and on throughout the day asking if everything is Ok. Its heart-warming, and slightly embarrassing, as we are untouched by the Maiden Gully Fire. The fire started on Bracewell Street, which is officially Maiden Gully, but closer to Eaglehawk. Its between 2 and 3 k from here. Anyone who attended the last Easter 3 days in Victoria will know the area. Its the road on the western edge of the New Saint Mungo map, or through the middle of the Devonshire Reef map. We received early warning from Aaron Dodd and Sophie Barker who were travelling to Marong from Boort for a wedding reception. Their phone call alerted us, so out we went and started laying out the hoses, filling the water containers and donning the appropriate clothing. Aaron and Sophie turned up to help defend if it was required, so we had a professional on hand (Aaron works for DSE and volunteers for the CFA). The early threat messages started on the radio and it became known as the Maiden Gully fire.
But our part of Maiden Gully was upwind of the fire. It burnt away from us, through New Saint Mungo map, and then through St Justs Point and California Gully. We quickly realised we were out of the path of the fire's direction before and after the looming cool change, so stood at our front gate and watched the smoke, not fully understanding how serious the situation was closer in to Bendigo. The power went off, and Ceira and I drove to find a supermarket with power and cold food. That meant a longer drive than expected, and as we approached Bendigo we went through a series of diversions. The last two photos were snapped by Ceira and we started to get a sense of the seriousness of the situation.
The Primary School grounds used for the Easter Prologue seems to have survived. I was in the middle of mapping the area for a looming street event. It ended up within a couple of kilometres of the centre of Bendigo. No-one knows who of our friends and acquaintances has lost their homes. There are constant messages against sight-seeing, so its best to keep away. Ceira has made contact with a school friend in there, and the report was of far more homes destroyed than was being reported in the media at that stage.
It is sobering to think how quickly this happened within the urban area of Bendigo. I am confident no-one in there would have believed this possible until they saw it. I didn't.

Running warm up/down 23:30 [2] 4.0 km (5:53 / km) +20m 5:44 / km
shoes: Brookes Adreno-things

The human body if adaptable, but it needs time. Our Lithuanian visitor arrived a day ro two ago, and went for her first run this morning at about 7.00am. Poor Indre looked like the 'heat' was hard work. But then, her previous run was at -12. I went for a short jog to the shop for the papers afterwards. The temperature was rising rapidly, and was at 32 by the time I was back. Too hot to keep running.

Note

Power back on, and fire now headed away from us. Photo and story tomorrow.
