Running 42:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

A very Adelaide run along the Torrens. After the dinner experience last night I felt I was letting the side down by not running with white wine in the drinking bottle.

Got this run in before leaving for the airport. Flights have only one redeeming feature.. free time to read. Of course, the choice is between work or pleasure (not always mutually exclusive). As always I was tempted by the over priced book shop that one has to pass whilst killing time after seat allocation. The non-fiction had quite a few credit card burners. Les Carlyons Great War, Blainey's Short History of the World, Greenspan's apologia for catalysing a series of asset inflation spirals, and in the same shelf, some memoirs of a call girl. The latter looked too interesting, so I walked out without buying anything. The solution was work reading instead both there and back. Turned out to be a good choice:
Interview notes on the state of cropping farming in Birchip. (Reviewing task)
Chinese agriculture, small holders and trade: Driven by the Livestock Revolution. (An amazing story of economic transformation that has only just started)
There is no "Paradox of Prosperity" (an appallingly argued libertarian tract against happiness economics)
Understanding resident views on land use change: Preliminary Report (the land use in question being MIS plantation schemes)
Rethinking public economics: the implications of rivalry and habit. (This was the highlight. A paper with the potential to change the world of public policy).

Ruuning around the Lake with sprints and recoveries. Too tired to add much else. Its been one of those days. And was down to organise the Pseud-O tonight. Off to Adelaide tomorrow.

Water at the Today

I'm curious. No water out on the 9.7k course. I seemed to be in the minority carrying water on my back. Were the faster runners carrying water some other way. Did you have it stashed at the map changeover? Did you just go thirsty? I must admit this race made it clear there would have been a time penalty for stopping to pump water as we normally do.

Real Orienteering race (Diamond Hill) 1:15:30 [4] 10.8 km (6:59 / km) +485m 5:43 / km
spiked:26/30c shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

7.47m/k based on straight line. (9.7k)
Error free distance: 10.5

That is quite a good effort for me. Its mainly thanks to Aislinn Prendergast and Roch Prendergast who allowed me to gate crash their family duel. Aislinn is a pretty impressive runner at the moment and I would expect she would be in the JWOC team this year on today's speed.

A great course on an under-appreciated map. Well-done Jymbo.

But as for SI. Well, that felt like a salutary lesson in the inability to ever get a win. The new SI boxes are meant to be programmed once and then they can be re-used at each event without reprogramming. Its meant to save time (and risk). There was that NOL event in Tassie where the SI boxes were programmed to start on the wrong day. That is every organiser's nightmare. I remember driving to Kooyoora with the start and finish boxes for a World Masters Carnival event. The rest of the boxes were in the forest and programmed to wake at 7.00am. As 7 ticked over on my watch I expected to hear the start boxes beep on. Silence. Panic. Turned out my watch was a minute fast. They beeped in unison at 7.01 on my watch. The days of those panics are over. But different problems arise.

Daylight saving. Jymbo set the mass start time for 8.00am. We belatedly realised that the boxes were set to standard time. Simple solution. Reprogram the start time to AEST. Job done. Nup. Turns out another club had used the boxes for the sprint championship in November. Rather than using AEST for the start, they had reprogrammed some of the boxes to summer time. What we has out in the field was a mix of boxes on standard and summer time. Oh well. Just grin and bear it.

Other amusement of the day was a conversation I missed but had reported to me in detail.
Competitor: Why can't I enter on the day?
Organiser: Because it make the task too hard for the organiser.
Competitor: Well, you won't get many entrants.
Organiser: I don't care. I'd rather be able to manage the event on the day. If you keep to Enter on the Day with SI, you might have more competitors, but you will have fewer organisers.
Competitor: I don't agree.
Organiser: Have you ever organised an SI event?
I think the conversation degenerated from that point and we needn't go there. But it does highlight one of the trade-offs we face.

I think the concept of "Enter on Day" orienteers running with punch cards, drawing their own map with self-serve manual timing is a fair compromise. You cannot expect pre-marked maps without prior notification. Pre-entry avoids the greatest hassle of SI... on-the-day entering of competitors. Get rid of that and the logistics change very quickly. Only one computer is needed. No more problems with networks. Less battery power needed. Batteries and networks are standard problems for most organisers. Inevitably, EOD runners will be unofficial if there is anything 'official' about the event. It makes wonderful sense from an organisers perspective, unless you start using pre-allocated start times. Clearly not everyone agrees.

Note: This was yet another Bendigo International, with Indre from Lietuva and a surprise visitor from in a DVOC shirt from the US. Great to have visitors.

Running warm up/down (Strathdale) 25:00 [1] 4.0 km (6:15 / km) +10m 6:10 / km
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Run down to the store to buy the Saturday paper. With Jymbo's sprint tonight, an easy morning was called for. The positive side of the run was I looked forward to it. The negative was that the slow pace felt very very very very desirable. Now to read about the shenanigans in Parliament. That "Sorry" bipartisanship didn't last long.

Medium term prediction:
Nelson resigns. Turnbull and Joe Hockey-stick stand as a team. Only on the basis that Turnbull is such a north shore plum (though with a Vaucluse seat) that he needs Joe's "Bob Hawke" larrikan touch in the team. I was impressed that Joe H admitted on Four Corners that other cabinet members hadn't realised that some workers could end up worse off. And there I was thinking conspiracy, that they all knew this but wouldn't admit it. No. There were a few kangas loose in a few top paddocks. For once I was flabbergasted about the quality of our representatives. I didn't think it could possibly be worse than I imagined. Name names Joe!

Real Orienteering race 21:16 [5] 4.1 km (5:11 / km) +40m 4:57 / km
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Jymbo's sprint-O race. A prologue to the big one tomorrow, being the real orienteering on Diamond Hill. Here's food for thought.
1. Pre-marked mapS. Note the plural. Two maps per competitor. Hageby style.
2. Gold mining terrain on a well mapped area.
3. Good course setting (having seen the courses last night while helping set up the SI system).
4. Mass start for atmosphere and fun.
So why do so few people sign up for this event yet sign up for SL events on bland terrain with potentially mediocre course setting and competitor marked maps? Maybe word hasn't got out yet. It might be argued that some of the most interesting events this season will not be part of the State League. Or maybe I just have a low boredom threshold.

The race was fun, but I'm not sure if sprinting in a park qualifies as real orienteering or Pseud-O. I'll take advice on this quandary.

And it was a slog. Almost 90 seconds slower than last week. The sort of run where you are just hanging out for it to finish. But I cheered up listening to Parliament this morning. Serial expulsions from the chamber without the naming of members. It seems the opposition is determined to force divisions during the new Friday sitting and the government is determined to avoid them. I am not sure what this has to do with governing the country. I think some parliamentarians need to take a LHLAT (copyright Coodabeens). Its not even good theatre.

Pseud-O race 1:00:15 [4] 10.8 km (5:35 / km) +160m 5:12 / km
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

NOT TURNING COCKATOO
It was Pseud-O again tonight. The highlight came before the race when a galah flew down from a tree and landed on Jo-Anne Keely's head. It took a look at the rest of us and then flew off in disgust. Maybe this was a portent of later events in the night. For some reason the body was not operating at maximum efficiency, and the brain was similarly disengaged. Spring Gully is normally a slower map, but that doesn't explain it all. Doesn't matter. Its only Pseud-O. I'm organising the event next week, a la Hudson style. No punch controls. Just hand out the maps and put up the results.
The excitement for the day came after the event when Ilks rang to tell us she had been offered her dream job as grade 1 physio at Royal Hobart. Accommodation already looks like its sorted out with an adventure racing household. I suppose this means Ilka will become a Tassie Forester. When Jymbo complains I'll tell him "at least Ilks ISN'T TURNING COCKATOOOO" (Note the tenuous link to the confused galah incident) That was looming as a possibility at one stage. This might be Bendigo's repayment for the loan of Danielle we enjoyed for a year. Maybe we are now running an exchange program. Our orienteers go to Tassie to run real hills, theirs come here to experience runnable forest.
At the moment most of this household is green with envy. All those mountains, forests and beaches on the doorstep. Pity about the available orienteering terrain other than Pittwater and Jason's Task.

Note
(rest day)

Timed a rest day to coincide with the peak of the heat.
Off-topic musing of the day. I want one of those Work Choices mouse pads that Julia wants to give away. I'd put it in a frame next to my 'Be Alert but not Alarmed" fridge magnet, if I'd had the foresight to put ours aside rather than throw it out in disgust. I think back in the fridge magnet days I felt as though "Honest" John would live forever and refuse to retire before Peter. I don't think my imagination could have conceived of the news headline today- a Labor PM with a record 70% approval rating and a Liberal opposition leader at a record low 9%. If that is possible, the US might even get a black (or woman) President.
Memo to Clara
Entering Easter is indeed scary. Especially when pressing the credit card payment button.

Today was an act of devotion to my sport... a six hour meeting at Macedon. I wasn't the only one. A bunch of very dedicated souls. Took the opportunity afterwards to drive up to the top of the Macedon Range for a run. Cool. Green. Soft under foot. Good scenery. When I arrived back in Bendigo 90 minutes later it was still too hot to run. Omego Block (Camel's Hump) to the Cross and return. Saw climbers in action on the Omega Block. Reminded me of my past enthusiasm for the sport. Enthusiasm leads to administration. I remember long meetings for the Victorian Climbing Club. I think they still use the constitution I drafted. I don't miss that. More interesting was that i didn't feel the old adrenalin rush and the longing to climb again. I'd look like a dangling goat.

MTB (Not O) 33:30 [3]

Managed a half hour of riding on the way home from Melbourne. GPS logging of tracks was the main objective. Fitness was second. Found a great assembly area. I am beginning to think the MTBO people will love this area more than real orienteers. Still, its worth persevering.

Run around Blackjack Gully with Jools and with the GPS logging. Maybe I can use the track to join Ian Johnsons 5 individual and idiosyncratically scaled maps into one.
Then off to run through Campbell's Creek State Forest to start logging tracks there in preparation for a mapping project. Its good enough for local events. If it was as close to Melbourne as Carroll Springs, I reckon a State Champs minimum. The extra hour downgrades it to a club map.

After running 21 minutes dead last week on the test run, I was aiming again to be under sub 21. This time I made the target with 29 seconds to spare. Most of this time was made up in the first half of the run. Leads me to suspect that this improvement is only partly improving fitness, but also better judgement about pacing. Also possibly faster because the run was in the middle of the day rather than early morning. A rest the day before might have helped as well. Anyway, starting my eighth week of running after the knee surgery. This is the 8th time on this test, and the kilometre rate has taken a jump.
6.06 4.54 4.45 4.34 4.27 4.24 4.21 4.15
I think the medium term target is sub 20 minutes. For the first time this appears feasible to me.

Pseud-O race 32:27 [3] 5.6 km (5:48 / km) +70m 5:27 / km
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Another night, another ersatz-O. Yawn. I arrived 30 minutes after the start, thanks to a one-on-one work meeting going overtime in Melbourne. I didn't think street-O justified walking out on the departmental secretary, so I was left with 30 minutes of the event (For Melbourne readers Bendigo runs 1 hr score events on street maps). This left me with an interesting choice. I had told the organiser (Evan) that he shouldn't wait for me to collect controls. So which did I value more-- the extra 30 minutes running or the post event socialising. The latter won out, aided by soreness in a quite private location that is unlikely to be a training overuse injury. I think a trip to the doctor very soon is required.
Ilka was at the event tonight and put in an impressive run. One control short of a full set and only a minute late.

PS to Oxoman. I will look out for Coonans Hill on the schedule and come down if I can. Might even bring the pork pie hat and the violin case.

Note

Just noticed... seven days straight with running on the log. I think this is a good sign that the post operation period is drawing to a close. I don't feel any unusual muscle soreness.

Pseud-O race 47:26 [4] 8.35 km (5:41 / km) +75m 5:26 / km
shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Was in Melbourne, so thought I may as well run the Street O on the set of Melbourne's gangland murders. Well, I think that is the Strathmore map. It was a rectangular street grid, much like the Kennington map. Also like Kennington it had no forest or gold mining features to redeem it. I could see it as a warm up for tomorrow's street O on Flora Hill/One Tree Hill. I tried to convince Don to advertise it as part of the Northern Series during his promotional spiel before the event, but no luck there.
Did the A course and I am very confident I did NOT choose the optimum controls. Hopped in the car straight afterwards and drove to a friend's house where w eplayed music till after midnight. Fingers sore this morning.

spiked:29/30c slept:6.0 weight:80.2kg shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Error free distance: 9.45k 10 m less climb
The true beginning of the REAL orienteering season. Almost missed the event as somehow the alarm was mis-set. Arose at a very late 6.25 and were on our way out the driveway 18 minutes later.
If you can avoid the actual pain of getting up and getting there on a Sunday morning, a 7.30 am mass start and an hour of bush running is lots of fun. A great way to whet the appetite for the rest of the season. It was meant to be a 60 minute score event, but I was enjoying it so much I made a decision to go for all controls with 7 minutes before the hour was up. As it turned out, I gained an extra 60 points on controls and lost 60 points in penalties. But i won an extra six minutes of bush navigation. I think this shows that the controls were a bit close together for a 10 point per minute penalty. Some observations.
1. No injury pain, and I ran without strapping the ankles. The latter was an outcome of poor preparation from lack of practice. No strapping tape in the bag. No sweat band either.
2. The start was very amusing, with a few speedy souls running of ahead of Leon Keely. Seeing Leon chase John Wilkinson up a hill is a rare sight. Needless to say, I couldn't keep up with the early sprinters, but by the fourth control they were dropping behind... except for Leon of course.
3. Julie is no longer club president, though she is vice-president. Assuming another two year term, that will men 8 years when this household has provided a president or vice president. I don't think any household being that dominating is healthy for a club.
4. I was surprised by my running speed, coming in at under 6 minutes a kilometre. Something must be wrong with the map scale.
5. Navigation seemed very simple. The only blemish was when I relied upon Bruce Paterson to lead me to a control. That was a mistake.

Ran to Julie's Newcomers Series on Myer's Creek. Its the first for the year. I wouldn't have been surprised if no-one turned up, but I got a call from Jools that there were 13 starters and she needed some paper cups. So I ran down there with cups and then around some of the courses to pick up controls. From what I heard the participants all enjoyed themselves, and one commented that it was good to learn without all those fast lycra types around. Message?
As for the run, other than some muscle tightness from yesterdays run, nothing else hurt! In fact, I'd have to say it felt reasonably good. getting into the forest was quite uplifting. Looking forward to the Fowl and Fizz tomorrow. My second good run since the operation!
