Pseud-O race 38:20 [4] ** 5.59 km (6:51 / km) +35m 6:39 / km
spiked:20/20c shoes: ASICS Kayano white

Another Pseud-O event. I fear I was beaten by spouse this time. The only navigational challenge was actually finding the semi hidden controls. I may have been outdone in this element, in addition to the running. Will see when the 2-D rerun comes live.
Confirmed.

Running tempo 15:20 [4] 3.01 km (5:06 / km) +10m 5:01 / km

Three kilometre time trial along Bendigo Creek. Splits 5.14, 5.10, 4.55. Seem to have gained 10 seconds a kilometre on last week. One more week of training before Tasmanian trip. Would like to run under 15 minutes next week. But realistically that 20 seconds will be a lot harder to gain than the 30 gained this week.

Bendigo has its very own little bit of Cyanide Dam. Some discontinuous gullies, some quite shallow.

Real Orienteering (McIvor Range) 55:44 [3] *** 7.16 km (7:47 / km) +110m 7:14 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

Day 2 Hagaby.
I was again reminded how much speed I have lost.Couldn't keep up with Julie in the first loop. She did have a shorter variation, but this didn't explain all the distance between us. Jim gave me a rousing ribbing as I came through the changeover, letting me and everyone else around that I was being beaten by my spouse. Finally got a sight of her just before we entered the second traverse of the McIvor Range. Somewhere in this I overtook her, but with all that coffee bush, I can't say I noticed. I think the strategy of maintaining height and traversing horizontally into 14 on the hill side was the reason for the change in positions. It was nothing to do with fitness or speed. Most who tried traversing seemed to lose height and ended up with a significant climb to the control. It would have been better to drop to the road and run along it. I also think the green was thinner higher up.

Impressed by the 6 second gap between Ralph and Leon, despite having opposite variants.

7 AM

Walking 1:30:00 [1] 6.0 km (15:00 / km)

New golf cart made all the difference to my game. Best score since taking this stupid pastime up again.
6 PM

Real Orienteering race (Heathcote) 20:06 [4] 4.1 km (4:54 / km) +10m 4:51 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

Somewhere between Real-O and Pseudo-O. Sprint around Heathcote. The creek controls tipped the balance in favour of real-O.
For some reason the GPS failed to record the first part of the race, despite showing satellites received prior to starting. So it missed my full speed collision with a wire fence between 9 and 10. Put a foot through the fence before hitting it at a reasonable speed. As a result I was wrapped up in it after doing a 180 degree vertical spin. Lovely linear bruises on the upper thigh now.
Not sure about the distance.
Most impressive feat of the day was a single person running Victoria's first event with SI Air. Well done Jim.

Only three available weeks for Easter training... excluding two weeks perhaps in the Western Arthurs.

Amusing wander with daughter who discovered that Wii golf and the real thing are somewhat different.Mind you, I wasn't all that much better.

Pseud-O 41:48 [3] 6.15 km (6:48 / km) +50m 6:32 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

A return to Bendigo by Pseud-O after quite a few years. The decline in running speed in the intervening years made quite apparent at the point when I was passed by someone who was half my height.
Clssic dilemma experienced. Do I go for that last control. It was tight and decided discretion was the better part. Arrived at finish 3.15 early. Calculations reveal I would have taken 4.10 to get the extra control. So would have been back 55 seconds late, and lost the value of that control. Might have been worth the extra run to get that panic sprint at the end.
Looks like a good chance that in a a year or so the club will have a single map of all Bendigo and the forests surrounding it.

spiked:15/20c shoes: ASICS Kayano white

Korong Spur. Middle distance course designed by the visiting Brits. Good reminder of the coming season and the need to concentrate in granite.
Started at 8- late compared with golf... but it is a 60 minute drive to get there.
After once exercise most decided it was too warm to do the next two. So I will return mid week to have a go.
Rn the course with Nigel. At most controls we looked for alternate routes on the next leg and ran them, hopefully emerging together at the next control. That generally happened.
11 AM

Walking 45:00 [1] 3.0 km (15:00 / km) +90m 13:03 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

Gave up the mapping due to heat. It took more concentration than I could muster.

Tuesday Feb 9, 2016 #

7 AM

Walking 1:30:00 [1] 6.0 km (15:00 / km)

Mildly less frustrating. Am looking forward to the promise of a round of golf with daughter. She tells me she will do ok because she gets pars and birdies on Wii golf, and the real thing can't be much different, can it? Evil grin.
9 AM

Walking 1:51:00 [1] 6.6 km (16:49 / km) +200m 14:36 / km

First forays into the granite part of this terrain.

Monday Feb 8, 2016 #

8 AM

Walking 2:45:00 [1] 11.0 km (15:00 / km) +190m 13:48 / km

Covered over a square k. Obviously not your most complex terrain.

7 AM

Real Orienteering race (One Tree Hill) 59:04 [3] 7.7 km (7:40 / km) +230m 6:40 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

And so the season starts. Somewhat ignominiously. Besides being slower with each progressing year (due to the greater time spent injured with each progressing year), I also made a couple of poor control selections. A little tuning up is required to pass the ignominious threshold to just plain ordinary.

Again, the push ups are a small part of the routine, but they don't feel like a 1 effort.

Running 1:10:00 [3] 10.31 km (6:47 / km) +50m 6:38 / km

Slow running along unfamiliar tracks keeping an eye out for the photo of the day.
