Welsford.
A run... without twisting my ankle, cracking a rib, aggravating PF issues. Miraculous.

Note

Most of the day mapping. First draft of Camp Hill complete. Now I have to forget it and then after a break return and critically take my work apart. That's sprint mapping.

Note

Organising events. Learnt what I always knew. You can't take a casual approach to sprint course design.

Running 13:26 [3] 2.13 km (6:18 / km)

Started feeling like I was running freely again. Decided it was time to close the injury log for my cracked rib. Ten metres later I twisted my ankle and had to hobble back to the car. That night it went purple. No running this weekend.

Riding in Forrest. Other than the stack at speed, it a pretty boring past time in my opinion.

Note

Thoughts on the carnival-
1. Really enjoyed the terrain. Fast sandy mallee most days. It rewarded Bendigo style navigation - red line stuff.
2. Thought Jamestown an good event centre given the isolation of the area.
3. Liked our visit and explore of Terowie. Pretty much a spruced up ghost town. Maldon without people.
4. Learnt there is more than one way to map erosion country, I prefer the Victorian way. Will get plenty of that in October!
5. Feet survived the experience of three days of running. Putting them on ice for an hour each evening before bed seemed to work wonders. They are sore today though after day three they were pretty good. Strange.
6. The courses left a lot of mapped terrain untouched. I am left wondering if anyone would ever dare set a course in terrain like the east of this map. The only features are small clearings... widely spaced with sparse bland contours. Evil stuff.

spiked:9/14c shoes: ASICs Kayano 21 Grey

Easter Day Three Mulga Valley.
More fast mallee spur gully, but with a very deep erosion gully at the end.
Bad-
Uncertain on early controls... a common feature of my weekend. Messy in the circle on 5,12,13, but not much lost. Did become confused going to 7, but luckily stumbled across 8 on theway so recovered a little returning there after 7. I lost 2.40 in errors in total, my worst day of the carnival. As well, i was quite tired towards the end. The lack of training really started to show. Twelfth place on the day.
Good-
Check out the red lining to control 3. I think I used a theodolite.
Like day 1, the times were again compressed,so though my placing was 12th, I only dropped overall one place to seventh. This exceeded my objectives for the carnival. I thought 8th was best possible and top ten would be good. Rationally I accepted that 15th was quite possible. So happy given the limited training.

spiked:10/12c shoes: ASICs Kayano 21 Grey

Easter Day 2. More fast Mallee spur gully.
Bad- Uncertain on first two controls in an erosion water course. Lost maybe a minute. The mapping was quite unlike Victorian erosion mapping. Far fewer bank lines and more use of contours. Still, I didn't adapt. Was caught by the following starter.
Good- Outweighed the bad. Finished 6th today and jumped up to sixth overall. Most of the gain was made on one leg - 7 to 8. I clearly chose the best route choice and most didn't. I watched the train go the other way as I struggled up a steep rocky gully wondering if I had made the correct choice. Its a little disconcerting having a clear view of the rest of the field going a different direction. 8-9 was pretty good as well. Note- same good controls as the previous day.
5.3 straight line

Real Orienteering race (Wonna Creek) 44:54 [4] 4.97 km (9:02 / km) +225m 7:22 / km
shoes: ASICs Kayano 21 Grey

Easter Day1 Wonna Creek.
Fast Mallee scrub in sandy soil. Finished 11th with 4th place less than 2 minutes in front. That describes the terrain. Big mistakes were unlikely given the open terrain, relative safe spur gully and short legs. Times were compressed across the field.
The bad- 1 minute of mistakes. These occurred towards the end of the course where pain in the foot made concentrating hard. I mis-thumbed 13 and ran past the last control in the finish chute before reversing in time.
The good- 5th fastest time on legs 8 and 9. Straight up over the hill was best route choice.

Straight line 4.3
