Real Orienteering race (Korong Spur) 1:23:51 [3] **** 8.78 km (9:33 / km) +295m 8:11 / km
spiked:16/17c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Course 1 Korong Spurs.
33rd bush event.
Yes, I ran the course a day early. But all the stands and boxes were out, and I was not going to miss this one. Off to Canberra tomorrow.
Early run of the Bendigo Rocks event on Korong Spur. Really enjoyable course, despite the climb. Interesting nav, route choice, green passages optional, blue sky, good views. One of the most enjoyable events this year. And I was there a day early.

Technical training 1:05:00 [3] 8.7 km (7:28 / km) +130m 6:57 / km

Followed Julie on Course 1 from last Saturday. She made two thumbing errors in succession. Not sure she appreciated me calling out as she sped off into the wrong direction.
She is faster than me.

Real Orienteering race (Wattle Gully (Spring Gull) 1:09:09 [3] **** 6.83 km (10:07 / km) +225m 8:42 / km
spiked:9/15c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

32nd Bush event
Spring Gully (Fryerstown).
Tough country when your right glute is being nursed through the event.
Only spiked 9 out of 15, but this makes it sound worse than it was. I calculate a 9% error rate by time. I have had much worse.
2-3 was the worst. Took the wrong route choice to left of creek. That would not have been so bad, except for unmapped thicket along the creek. I had to run along for a while looking for a crossing point. Then I stuffed up at the other end. This was the big error. Maybe 4 minutes.
5-6 30 seconds maybe. I came in metres from the control and didn't see it, so turned the wrong way.
7-8 Went past the pit and had to backtrack a short way. 20 seconds.
9-10 Wrong route choice. Probably better off on the track to the west.
12-13 A hard one to spike coming down the hill in the green. Aimed for the clearing, turned left and then went back up the creek. 50 seconds?
14-15 Wrong line to control 10 seconds.
In summary, major time losses due to the Bendigo straight line tendency. Have to cure this.

Real Orienteering race (Bullock Creek) 56:59 [4] *** 8.15 km (7:00 / km) +130m 6:29 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

31st bush event of the year.
Course 1 on Bullock Creek. This was an entirely different experience to last week on Sedgwick. Equally as enjoyable. This is true red line country. Not many reasons to deviate. No reasons to excuse a walk. The pressure is on to run hard the whole way. I never was fast as a runner, and I am quite a bit slower than I used to be. So I am quite happy with a straight line speed of 7.36 per kilometer.
The other good news from today was a successful blooding of two new course setters. All the controls were accurately placed. Keen to have another go next year. Good for the sport.
The less pleasant news was a fall in which I again damaged that left glute and hamstring area. Managed to finish after a short interval with not much change of speed. But on cooling down it started to limit my movement. Icing tonight. May be a slower run tomorrow. Hopefully I will start, even if I don't finish. It will be event number 32.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 10.0 km (15:00 / km)

Thursday Jun 22, 2017 #

Note

I am coming to believe that one of the criteria for Victoria's choice of areas to lidar is whether there is interesting orienteering terrain. If there is, exclude it from the flight.

Wednesday Jun 21, 2017 #

Note

Concerned to notice that six of the past seven days have orienteering activity logged-
Thursday test running courses.
Friday checking terrain at Beechworth
Saturday local event
Sunday killing catcus on Kooyoora
Monday non orienteering day
Tuesday Mapping
Wednesday rerun course 1 from saturday.
Memo to self. Get out more. Spent part of last night looking at walk itineraries in the Pirin, Rhodope, Carpathian and Tatra Mountains. I play music that started in these places, so probably should see them.
11 AM

Technical training 1:11:46 [3] *** 8.36 km (8:35 / km) +340m 7:08 / km
spiked:11/11c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Ran course 1 from saturday's event. It was an excellent course... much better than course 2. I think shorter course runners generally get short changed in long events.
Some lessons-
1. Lasted the distance though feet were hurting in the last 20 minutes.
2. The left route choice on the first long leg wasn't worth it. I think I lost 20 seconds compared with the same leg stroight on Saturday.
3. The right hand route choice on the last long leg was worthwhile. The climb was all concentrated early in the leg and was obvious enough to push people towards the left leg.
4. Improving slowly. I would be happy with another five minutes improvement on today's run.

Running hills 41:55 [3] 6.35 km (6:36 / km) +250m 5:31 / km

Hard Mackenzie return. Gained 10 seconds on last week. I think the easy improvements are over.

Sunday Jun 18, 2017 #

Note

No running today. Cactus destruction instead. I suspect the local orienteering community will become known as the extreme cactus group. The location on the northern slopes of Kooyoora was a little too arduous for the local landcare members.

Real Orienteering race (Sedgwick) 46:32 [3] *** 5.38 km (8:39 / km) +260m 6:58 / km
spiked:9/10c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

30th Bush event for year. Equal to last years total.
Ted-set event on Sedgwick. Somewhat physical, bit route choice took the mind off that. One blemish- went too high on first control and lost 50 seconds. That proved decisive in the personal competition.

Note

Spent the daylight hours on a trip to Beechworth to be taken on a tour by Leigh Privett. Then drove back to Bendigo to catch a train. Made it by 30 seconds. Off to Melbourne for OV Council meeting. Big day. Big conundrum. One map needed, three excellent areas.

Walking 1:30:00 [1] 6.0 km (15:00 / km)

12 holes for an 18 hole equivalent of 91. Thats the best since my 20s. Actually only two off my all time best.
Excellent morning to be outside. Still air, blue skies, next to no frost.

Running hills 42:06 [4] 6.38 km (6:36 / km) +250m 5:31 / km

Excellent day continued with good weather and a better run on this than last week.

Real Orienteering race (Burngoogee) 53:44 [3] *** 5.22 km (10:18 / km) +135m 9:07 / km
spiked:7/10c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Forest event 29
Burngoogee
Spiked 7 of 10. The three errors were more significant than yesterday.
2- a little low. 20 seconds
3- only confusion for the weekend. Went down the wrong small parallel gully. Relocated off nearby yellow. 1.45
5- went off the line somehow trying to avoid the rocky stuff. Spiked the control but not optimum route. 1.15
6% error time which is more usual.
The map was less fun than Connorton. As a sign of the future, the EOD course was the same as for M65A. I get there in three years. I can't say that with courses this short there is much attention paid by the course setter to route choice. This was a red line course. There was little reason to deviate from the straight route. So what differentiates a long from a middle- extra time and physicality. But as ages get beyond 60, courses are meant to get less physical. I fear there is little difference between long and middle in my future orienteering.

Real Orienteering race (Connorton) 37:07 [3] **** 4.0 km (9:17 / km) +105m 8:12 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Forest event No 28
Connorton.
OK, I am claiming I spiked 14 of 16. But the misses were small- 30 seconds at most. That makes an error rate of 1.5%. That is a record since I started this calculation. Ironic it was as an Enter on the Day for a national carnival.
The map was a vast improvement on the first version and I made sure I congratulated Alex.

Test ran Course 1 for event on Virginia Hill. As always, what looks good on the screen looks different on the ground, so a few changes decided upon.

Note

Thirty kilometres running in a week. 80% of that in terrain. Its been a while since I managed that.

spiked:10/11c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

27th Bush event
Bendigo Bush 9
Ran this one a few days before official start time. All the boxes were out. I used an SI stick, but declined the opportunity to download an official result.
The area is the overlap between the Lyell Forest Nth and Sth maps. It has rarely been used because of an absence of parking. Very few tracks. Enjoyed this, particularly the first 1.25k leg with no tracks crossed. Some at times very subtle contours. Significant veg changes in a few places. I think it could do with a remap with lidar, but no lidar covers the area. Would be a treat for a three day event on the three Lyell Forest areas.

spiked:12/18c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

26th Bush event for 2017
Missed six controls. Four each cost 2 minutes each, the other two were just minor losses. All up nine minutes to errors, 14% of my time. I suppose its better than yesterday. I put it down to the Bendigo syndrome of going straight and hoping for the best. At least six munites could have been saved by the simple expedient of aiming off.

Real Orienteering (Smiths Reef) 45:29 [3] *** 5.35 km (8:30 / km) +140m 7:31 / km
spiked:5/10c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

25th bush event for the season. But not an auspicious run.
Fluffed half the controls, with 21% of my time being wasted. That's a new record for the year, and it was on relatively benign spur-gully. Started to worry I was developing orienteering dementia.
Or maybe it was from being distracted by sorting out the rego desk IT equipment, followed by four orienteering errands.
Will try and concentrate tomorrow.

Running 47:00 [2] *** 5.5 km (8:33 / km) +50m 8:10 / km
shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Field checking a number of sites where point features on the old Bullock Track map could not be found using the lidar shape image. I think the map is pretty much updated for now. It will be the clubs first ISOM 2017 map. It doesn't make a lot of difference to spur gully terrain such as this.
This was by no means a hard run, but it was way advanced on my attempt at running on Tuesday.

Note

Second session of deep massage. Painful, but not as painful as last week. Apparently last week my left leg was "a rock".
