Stronachs to Tanjil Bren
Despite the model information, was kept awake by hail, rain and wind. Then in the morning snow was settling on the tent. This was at an altitude of only 1000 metres. If I continued I would be spending a lot of time between 1100 and 1300 metres. Recheck of weather and now saw four days of worse weather to come. This was just the prelude. The thought of four successive days of negative temperatures and severe weather warnings for the wind broke my spirit. Walked out as fast as I could.
Postscript. Now looks like seven days of snow in ten for the start of November. Totally different to last year where the concern was heat and water scarcity.

Talbot to Stronachs.
Windy day. Models deteriorating. A couple of days of snow on the way. Really cold so straight into bed with a desultory attempt at a meal. Just wanted to be warm. Down bag, duvet, long base layer and pants.

Walking 8:30:00 [2] 24.7 km (20:39 / km) +1485m 15:53 / km

Walhalla to Talbot Hut site. Hints of bad weather to come on the models. The traverse over Erica was in over boot height snow with the track running in water. Less than pleasant.

Real Orienteering (Cyanide Dam) 1:24:55 [3] **** 8.55 km (9:56 / km) +225m 8:47 / km

AWOC Championships. Made the decision at short notice to drive up because the event was on Cyanide Dam. Damn good spur gully map. Julie won the Womens' event with an error free run. A short lecture on compass technique from Warren seems to have solved her navigational issues. I was much less successful. Errors on three controls for a loss of 8 minutes. But the highlight of the run was the weather. Half the course was spent in pouring rain with thunder overhead and lightning cracks all around. Some decisions were made to stay off ridges. Ended up carrying my glasses and squinting at the map. There was so much rain it was hard to read the detail. All the gullies were awash with water, sometimes to ankle depth. And one control box in a pit fell off the stand and I had to search around in the foot deep water to find and replace it. With a few controls to go the storm passed and the remaining course was far less atmospheric...
