Running 27:36 [3] 4.0 km (6:54 / km) +80m 6:16 / km

Julie fed me a pie for lunch (quite unusual) then said "come for a run with me". Heavy lunches and running are not a prime combination. She left me behind and I lost sight after little more than a kilometre.

Snafu on number six. Took the safe recovery option up to the track and in from behind. Very nicely chosen control site.

Running tempo 11:58 [4] 2.0 km (5:59 / km) +20m 5:42 / km

My usual 2 k tempo run. The time was so slow I decided I needed to repeat it and do a little better.

Running tempo 11:12 [4] 2.0 km (5:36 / km) +20m 5:20 / km

The second run was much better. It was one of those rare experiences of enjoyable running. Wish they were all like this.

Walking warm up/down 2:40:00 [2] 12.0 km (13:20 / km)

Intended to run the new tracks at Sedgwick with GPS logger. Turned out body wasn't really keen on the idea, so it became a fast walk. Lots of new tracks for the map. Will take a couple more visits.

Ran two route options for the long leg at Sedgwick. Maybe its just a little too long. Rethinking.

The closest Bendigo comes to Street-O! Street route chocies and fine navigation in mining terrain near the circle. Despite being the map maker, I made two errors - both dure to overconfidence and the subsequent use of map memory based on 4 year old memories.

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (15:00 / km) +150m 13:43 / km

Finished field work of The Granites. Two hundred hours of work including 22 trips. A little over three square kilometres of terrain. Might take a break from mapping for a while.
And on cue just as I have finished drafting and compliance checking, and finishing with this AP entry, the courier arrives with a new golf club.

It seems that by Day 3 of Easter someone in the household mastered Gumble. It wasn't me. May have to get some tips from spouse.

Real Orienteering race (Gumble Pinnacles) 1:10:23 [4] ***** 5.56 km (12:40 / km) +185m 10:51 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Familiar story. Spike dthe first 11 controls, including the key control on the long leg that proved decisive for so many. In predicted 7th position. Then relaxed and took the Bendigo run straight at the control tactic, which definitely doesn't work at Gumble. Lost over 10 minutes and dropped from 7th to 17th. Lost interest again after that and took it easy. Please let it be over.

Clearly I am not used to terrain where you have to hold concentration and map location throughout the course. In Bendigo we we are always given legs where you can switch off and run on the red line. Even the last event at the Bermuda Triangle at Kooyoora there wer eoptions to run loose aiming for large open rock areas. There are no such features at Gumble. Each time I decided to try Bendigo tactics mid course, I lost 10 minutes or more. And so I finished 13th, close to my predicted worst feasible placing.

Real Orienteering race (Gumble Pinnacles) 1:24:38 [4] ***** 6.55 km (12:55 / km) +205m 11:10 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Messy but passable orienteering for the first third of the course. Spike dthe long leg with correct route choice. Then made a thumbing error and ran the wrong leg. Ended up 10 contours down the hill wondering why there were so many unbroken spider webs. And then I understood the mistake. Managed to relocate in very vague terrain and back up the hill to the correct control. Lost six places. At that point I was ready to give up orienteering. Walked the paddock routes back to the finish. Just wanted it to be over so I could go out on the golf course with Jymbo and Leepback.

Walking 1:35:00 [1] 6.4 km (14:51 / km) +30m 14:30 / km

Golf about on par with orienteering.

Real Orienteering race (Noahs Ark Ridge) 52:12 [4] **** 4.02 km (12:59 / km) +145m 11:00 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

I approached this Easter with a little confidence after some very accurate races on Korong and Kooyoora, but knowing the last month had been exercise free other than three orienteering events. Injury fears.

A quick scan of the field whilst on the trip to Molong lead to a conclusion that the best I could expect was 7th place if I navigated well, and 14th was likely if I navigated poorly. Anything better than 7th would require superior fitness.

So the first event was on a weird sandstone ridge. Lots of detail on the ridge and nothing much elsewhere. The sort of country to make little mistakes in profusion, but major getting lost was not possible. Lo and behold, I held the navigation together up until the spectator control, in 7th place. A blood mark on the map looked like a clearing and i used clearings to navigate to a control. The map was making little sense. Stuffed three controls in a row, dropped to 12th and there i stayed. Two control errors seemed about par for the course. I had four. That was one 7th place thrown away.
