Running race 40:00 [3] **** 3.6 km (11:07 / km) +125m 9:28 / km
spiked:12/17c weight:79.6kg shoes: New Balance Road shoes

My first run at Korong Spur. Course 7 from the Aus Middle Champs. Ironic as I have spent many hours up here organising and planning. Had trouble seeing the green streamers.

Running race 34:40 [3] **** 4.1 km (8:27 / km) +155m 7:07 / km
spiked:14/17c shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Course 6 from Aus Champs in reverse. 600 metres longer, but 5 minutes shorter. The difference... red tapes this time.

After a hard run yesterday, the body rebelled. So had an easy run logging tracks in the bush south of Browns Reef. Nice terrain!

Yesterday was the first Xmas in a long while when running before lunch was not on the menu. In fact, my normal Xmas run is around Aranda/Cook in Canberra. This was a rare year with the celebrations at home in Bendigo. Today was as penance run for the over indulgence of yesterday. Actually, as penance it was a failure. Lovely mild weather, new tracks logged on the GPS. What was meant to be an hour had an extra 20 minutes tagged on for the fun of it.

MTB (Not O) 33:10 [3] 10.61 km (3:08 / km) +105m 2:59 / km

Having trouble reconciling old cadastral maps to ny GPS logs. The Victorian map coordinate system shifted a year or two ago. I didn't take any notice then. Went out for a ride to get a bit more of the map (enlarged Browns Reef) onto GPS. Became a run free training half hour. Met he who must not be mentione dout there doing his power walking. I shouldn't have. But then, I was one worse, on a mountain bike, wasn't I.

Running long 2:16:00 [2] 20.8 km (6:32 / km) +210m 6:13 / km
weight:80kg shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Easy track logging between Lockwood and Crusoe Road (south of Browns Reef). Twenty k and my guess is not yet half way. Felt a bit tired by the 2 hour mark. Looking forward to a rest day tomorrow, which just happens to be Xmas Day! Just have to try and not eat too much.
After the run I didn't go to a specialty coffe shop and I particularly didn't have a long white.

Running warm up/down 53:18 [2] 9.6 km (5:33 / km) +65m 5:22 / km

Recovery day after the test run yesterday. Logging tracks with the GPS in Rocky Rises.
After the run I didn't go to a cafe and I didn't have a latte. I really enjoyed it.

Warm, humid. Surprised to knock another 10 seconds off the test run distance. The 20 minute mark looks elusive though. I've felt that way before, and then one day it just happens easily.

Logging tracks in Crusoe on the way down. OCAD 9 has simplified the processing immeasurably.

The weekly test run. This effort really hurts, but it helps afterwards to see the times grdaually coming down. 23 seconds off last weeks time, which was 20 seconds better than the previous etc etc. This is the 36th time I have done this test over about 7 years and there are 9 faster times than today. Last time i was this fast was in Feb 2005, but I'm still a long way off a consistent spread of 19 minute times in 2001. Two reasons for this.. age and weight. I can only fix one of those so I think its time for some more discipline on the latter. Can I start feeling holy about feeling hungry.. again.

Stationary Bike (Stationary bike) 15:00 [3]

In his depressing existential novel "The Plague"' Albert Camus argued that to get the most out of life one should spend the day in a queue, walking to the back whenever you get near the front. The metaphor was appropriate for a Europe coming out of war-torn Europe, where shortages were the norm and rationing was a tool of government. But of Camus was writing today, in the era of free-market fundamentalism, I think he would choose another metaphor. Perhaps the stationary bike.
I started with good intentions. After what felt like 5 minutes i glanced at my watch. Not even two. It lasted like that until I gave up. Though this log records only fifteen minutes, I can assure you all it was a good 37.5 minute existential workout. What we have here is a time machine. In some undiscovered unifying theory of relativity, the stationary bike warps time. It is as bad as the first 5 minutes of a long run. Both have a warp factor of about 2.5. Pool running is not far behind. In contrast, the third half hour of a good long slow run has a warp factor of about 0.3. Time passes without being noticed.
So beam me up Scotty, engage the warp drive. I'm back to running tomorrow.

Running long 1:44:47 [2] 17.2 km (6:06 / km) +135m 5:52 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Started at 7.30 which was much too late when the temperature guage was already showing 25. Slow, sore, unmotivated running. Did an extra 4 k after Julie stopped by not admitting i was doing it. Maybe I can add a bit more, and a bit more etc.

Running 33:22 [3] 6.0 km (5:34 / km) +35m 5:24 / km

Dropped a piece of wood on my foot last night. Consequences for this mornings run.
Moral. Drop wood next to your foot, not on it.

After a warm up, ran my test run. Over 4.6 k, about 20 seconds faster than a month ago, but 2 minutes behind peak fitness. Probably can't expect better.

Running 1:01:12 [3] 11.4 km (5:22 / km) +65m 5:13 / km

Morning run. Strangely, I even started feeling ok towards the end of the run.

Note
(rest day)

In Canberra. Don't feel like that run up Black Mountain.

Sunday Dec 3, 2006 #

Running long 1:25:59 [2] 14.0 km (6:09 / km) +155m 5:49 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Slow run. Maybe not all that long but had a plane to catch to Canberra. Time passed quickly once Jools asked me about the conference. Socio-economic impacts of water trade and National Water Initiative. I explained my recent work on that na dthe interaction between almond development in the Sunraysia, tax law, the Bunna Walsh canal, drought nad federal state relations. An hour disappeared. Very tolerant woman I am married too!

Note

In Canberra tonight. Think I might have missed the OA conference. Oh well. Water instead then.

Running tempo 40:57 [4] 7.55 km (5:25 / km) +60m 5:13 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

After weeks of slowness, tried to push harder. It took 20 minutes before any speed happened, and ended up running at less than 4min ks at the end. But it was real slow at the start.

Running 42:00 [3] 7.0 km (6:00 / km) +45m 5:49 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Track logging amongst the tailings in one of the few mined areas of the Welsford. A little too hot for running at lunchtime, but no time tonight.
