Note

Out Jimming Jim. Putting out controls and ended up working in the dark minus a torch towards the end of the session.

Note

Handicaps finished before midnight (just) which is better than usual for the Ironman. A day early only because there is a gig tomorrow evening and nothing orienteering will be happening. I will instead be trying not to play bum notes.

Rock climbing at Arapiles. Taught ourselves or re-taught ourselves various rope techniques such as equalettes and sliding Xs. Managed 5 easy climbs, Julie leading two of them.

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 9.0 km (13:20 / km)

Wet day. Visited the inspiring Bundaleer cliff to scope out impossible climbing masterpieces, and some easy options for a visit on a dry day. Julie was impressed.
Visited the Balconies for the first time in my life. Amused that the classic tourist shot used in government advertising (someone standing on the balcony) is actually not allowed. Signs forbid such amusement.
Walked to the Sundial lookout to see the sundial shadow in the late afternoon, between rain and hail showers.

What better cliff to visit on a wet day..
Camping Cave-001

I believe the climb Free Snaking in the 8th dimension goes up there. Julie is dumbfounded.
P8141631

On the way to the Sundial. Its hailing.
P8141643

The Sundial in action.

Walking 3:00:00 [1] 16.0 km (11:15 / km)

Tried to walk to Green Gap Pinnacle to check it out. The shortest way was along a seasonal track closure through a wetland. Ended up walking 16 kilometres including three through wet thick scrub. Didn't even get close to our objective. I have grabbed someone else's aerial photo of the crag to show you what we were aiming for. Comparte it with the fleeting glimpse we managed. Disappointing. We should have been here three years ago before the post-bushfire regrowth. Visited the much closer Eldorado cliff as consolation, but even that was a scrub bash. The old track is no more.

Wednesday Aug 7, 2013 #

1 PM

Running 40:10 [3] 6.7 km (6:00 / km) +25m 5:53 / km
shoes: Saloman silly lace shoes

Epsom creek trail. Back improved on yesterday. Speed not so.

Tuesday Aug 6, 2013 #

Running warm up/down 25:30 [2] 4.0 km (6:23 / km)
shoes: Saloman silly lace shoes

Dodder Track... real slow. Back survived. It only took seven minutes longer than a normal time.

Note

I am reading comments and hearing musings about how the State Series concept needs to be made simpler. Some suggestions.

1. Base the majority of bush orienteering around local events - Bendigo, Melbourne and Ballarat events. Bendigo will be weekely, but Melbourne and Ballarat less frequently obviously.

2. Reduce the State Series to 5 events each year. Long, Middle and Sprint Champs, and two Badge events. Maybe even drop the Badge events.

3. Coordinate the three local series to give a coherent state offering. For Ballarat and Bendigo this means not running events on the same weekend. For Bendigo this might mean organising the more high profile events (Bendigo Rocks, Orientshow, new maps etc) to fit in with weekends without Melbourne and Ballarat events.

I can foresee two problems with this, but I think its worth thinking through the problems.

Monday Aug 5, 2013 #

Note

Probably able to run, but discretion deemed wiser.

Sunday Aug 4, 2013 #

Note
(injured)

Saturday Aug 3, 2013 #

Note
(injured)

Improving slowly. The trajectory seems like it used to be.

Note

If I was going to be injured, it seems a pretty good day not to be orienteering around Bendigo. Glad I am not collecting controls.

Friday Aug 2, 2013 #

Note
(injured)

Worse.

Thursday Aug 1, 2013 #

Running warm up/down 50:00 [2] 7.5 km (6:40 / km) +30m 6:32 / km
