Walking 30:00 [1] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Salamon Sppedcross 4 blue V2

Control collection after my event at Woodvale.
Interesting feedback on the map, which is probably Australia's first gold mining map using the ISOM17 standard. The issue is a greater degree of generalisation due to inability to reduce symbol sizes (go on. Pull out one of your maps from around Ballarat and see how many different sizes of mines, pits and depressions you can find). Those who walked through the mining and commented generally thought more should be on the map. Those who ran through and commented were generally happy. This included one person who walked through and then ran through and gave differing optinions. Washup? I am not sure whether I can conclude that the new specification makes the map more legible or makes the navigation too easy. In other words, the answer depends upon your preferences. There is no right or wrong, despite what some seem to think.

Note

Being a glass half-full type I decided I might as well enter the Oceania carnival. Being totally unrealistic, I entered all the events. I think some walking on course will be in order.

Running 4:38 [3] 0.7 km (6:37 / km)

Leg felt fine. Went for a gentle jog. It felt fine for 500 metres. Then it wasn't. Gave up after trying another 150 and being forced to stop every 30 metres.

Real Orienteering (Mosquito Creek) 40:00 [3] *** 4.8 km (8:20 / km) +60m 7:51 / km
spiked:8/8c shoes: Salamon Sppedcross 4 blue V2

Leg felt fine. Ran course 3, with a bot of searching for a misplaced control. Leg started giving hints of it not being ok quite near the finish. Pulled up ok. Next day I wasn't. This is a really deceptive leg condition. You can't trust feeling you are recovered.

Walking 4:30:00 [2] 8.5 km (31:46 / km)

Cactus stabbing on the north slopes of Mt Kooyoora. Went places no orienteer has been before, and I suspect no mapper either. Not really orienteering and not quite rock climbing. Some wheel cactus found in some very difficult to reach locations on cliffs. Ascended out of the jungle by soloing up a very attractive dyke formation. It would be a rock climb if it was ten degrees steeper.

Running 6:45 [2] 0.8 km (8:26 / km)
shoes: Salamon Sppedcross 4 blue V2

Lasted 800 metres before muscle issues. Was feeling great, thinking maybe its time to turn this injury off on AP. Twenty minutes later sudden pain put an end to running... yet again. Like the old Monty python song- When will it ever end.

Monday Aug 5, 2019 #

Running 7:35 [2] 1.05 km (7:13 / km) +5m 7:03 / km
shoes: Salamon Sppedcross 4 blue V2

I suppose its a start. Managed 500 metres last week before re-injuring. Getting through 1k without injury (although with some warning sensations) is something to feel pleased about.
