Two weekends. Two hageby events! Bendigo excels! This hageby revealed just how rusty one can become. I was running by myself almost the whole race, unlike last week. I spiked one of the first eight controls. No tracks or rock on the map made One Tree Hill unusually challenging. My navigation settled down on the second loop and I only made one error. That particular control caught out many others. Quite low.
The other notable aspect of the day was a roll up of 21 novices out of a total of 46 entrants. Actually without the novices and the Nugget training squad from Melbourne, it would have been a very small event. The recruitment drive is really important. But the real advertising campaign only starts for next weeks event! We will be printing many pre-marked novice maps.

PS I note with amusement the auto spell checker would prefer choirboys to hageby.

Collecting controls. Only about a quarter of thsi was running. There were quite a few for a local event. Galvo provided a hageby for the A course, a scatter-O for the B course, a line course for moderate and two novice courses. I'll admit to feeling fatigued by the end.

A very Adelaide run along the Torrens. After the dinner experience last night I felt I was letting the side down by not running with white wine in the drinking bottle.

Got this run in before leaving for the airport. Flights have only one redeeming feature.. free time to read. Of course, the choice is between work or pleasure (not always mutually exclusive). As always I was tempted by the over priced book shop that one has to pass whilst killing time after seat allocation. The non-fiction had quite a few credit card burners. Les Carlyons Great War, Blainey's Short History of the World, Greenspan's apologia for catalysing a series of asset inflation spirals, and in the same shelf, some memoirs of a call girl. The latter looked too interesting, so I walked out without buying anything. The solution was work reading instead both there and back. Turned out to be a good choice:
Interview notes on the state of cropping farming in Birchip. (Reviewing task)
Chinese agriculture, small holders and trade: Driven by the Livestock Revolution. (An amazing story of economic transformation that has only just started)
There is no "Paradox of Prosperity" (an appallingly argued libertarian tract against happiness economics)
Understanding resident views on land use change: Preliminary Report (the land use in question being MIS plantation schemes)
Rethinking public economics: the implications of rivalry and habit. (This was the highlight. A paper with the potential to change the world of public policy).

Ruuning around the Lake with sprints and recoveries. Too tired to add much else. Its been one of those days. And was down to organise the Pseud-O tonight. Off to Adelaide tomorrow.

I'm curious. No water out on the 9.7k course. I seemed to be in the minority carrying water on my back. Were the faster runners carrying water some other way. Did you have it stashed at the map changeover? Did you just go thirsty? I must admit this race made it clear there would have been a time penalty for stopping to pump water as we normally do.

That is quite a good effort for me. Its mainly thanks to Aislinn Prendergast and Roch Prendergast who allowed me to gate crash their family duel. Aislinn is a pretty impressive runner at the moment and I would expect she would be in the JWOC team this year on today's speed.

A great course on an under-appreciated map. Well-done Jymbo.

But as for SI. Well, that felt like a salutary lesson in the inability to ever get a win. The new SI boxes are meant to be programmed once and then they can be re-used at each event without reprogramming. Its meant to save time (and risk). There was that NOL event in Tassie where the SI boxes were programmed to start on the wrong day. That is every organiser's nightmare. I remember driving to Kooyoora with the start and finish boxes for a World Masters Carnival event. The rest of the boxes were in the forest and programmed to wake at 7.00am. As 7 ticked over on my watch I expected to hear the start boxes beep on. Silence. Panic. Turned out my watch was a minute fast. They beeped in unison at 7.01 on my watch. The days of those panics are over. But different problems arise.

Daylight saving. Jymbo set the mass start time for 8.00am. We belatedly realised that the boxes were set to standard time. Simple solution. Reprogram the start time to AEST. Job done. Nup. Turns out another club had used the boxes for the sprint championship in November. Rather than using AEST for the start, they had reprogrammed some of the boxes to summer time. What we has out in the field was a mix of boxes on standard and summer time. Oh well. Just grin and bear it.

Other amusement of the day was a conversation I missed but had reported to me in detail.
Competitor: Why can't I enter on the day?
Organiser: Because it make the task too hard for the organiser.
Competitor: Well, you won't get many entrants.
Organiser: I don't care. I'd rather be able to manage the event on the day. If you keep to Enter on the Day with SI, you might have more competitors, but you will have fewer organisers.
Competitor: I don't agree.
Organiser: Have you ever organised an SI event?
I think the conversation degenerated from that point and we needn't go there. But it does highlight one of the trade-offs we face.

I think the concept of "Enter on Day" orienteers running with punch cards, drawing their own map with self-serve manual timing is a fair compromise. You cannot expect pre-marked maps without prior notification. Pre-entry avoids the greatest hassle of SI... on-the-day entering of competitors. Get rid of that and the logistics change very quickly. Only one computer is needed. No more problems with networks. Less battery power needed. Batteries and networks are standard problems for most organisers. Inevitably, EOD runners will be unofficial if there is anything 'official' about the event. It makes wonderful sense from an organisers perspective, unless you start using pre-allocated start times. Clearly not everyone agrees.

Note: This was yet another Bendigo International, with Indre from Lietuva and a surprise visitor from in a DVOC shirt from the US. Great to have visitors.

Seems at the dinner last night comment was passed implying I might spend too much time here. This is my attempt at self-monitoring of my addiction.
I think the minutes to the total can be traded for Bruce's Catching Features time.
