Real Orienteering race (Mt Beckworth) 1:40:00 [4] **** 9.64 km (10:22 / km) +450m 8:25 / km
spiked:16/22c shoes: Columbia

The BRUTAL numbers
8.3 k red line 360m advertised climb
9.64 450m travelled
9.1 optimal 400m (Can't see how I could have limited climb to the advertised 360m)

Brutal, but then, Mt Beckworth can never be anything else. You have two choices. Turn up knowing what you are in for, or stay home. I am firmly in the first camp. And I signed up for course 2! So I have no grounds for complaint. The course was as I expected. Perhaps even a little soft given the excursions into the flat northern colluvial deposits. But the soft-hearted course setter was more than compensated for by the weather. Started right on 8.30. Within half an hour the morning cool was memory. The body coped well until 1hr 20 when it started to rebel. The last 20 minutes was a slog. I even muffed the last control. I drank a litre on the course, then a litre of isotonic afterwards, followed by 1.2 litres of various other less sporty fluids. Even after that and party pies and cake in Clunes, I was down two kilos on the bathroom scales after the shower. That was why I had a headache. It wasn't the Bush-O committee after all!

Real Orienteering race (Wattle Gully (Spring Gull) 1:15:00 [3] *** 7.89 km (9:30 / km) +280m 8:04 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: Columbia

6.2 straight line
7.89 280 actual
6.8 225 optimal (ouch)

This was real nice orienteering. Spring Gully at Fyerstown is quality terrain. And the course setter gave us the best of the terrain and none of the boring bits. Despite the oppressive heat, I was surprised at how much fun I had. err, except for two particular controls. Two controls, 15 minutes lost, despite reaching within ten metres of each control on first approach. In each case I had misread the control description. Repeat 200 times... "Read the control description THOROUGHLY".

MY QUERY

Seems to have reached the O-Bulletin.
I cite:

"I hear BG are debating the term ?Season Opener? after they actually got things rolling a week earlier with a couple of fun events at the 2 day weekend."
It was actually the Fowl and Fizz event in very early Fenruary, as well as very early in the morning. A delightful score event on the Mandurang map. So delightful I stayed out late and collected the full complement of controls. That is our season opener.

Pseud-O race 1:00:12 [4] * 11.0 km (5:28 / km) +110m 5:13 / km
spiked:18/19c shoes: Brooks Thingummyjigs

Phot-O race around North Bendigo. Managed to stuff up a control, which is quite an achievement. Also, did not choose the most efficient route, but neither did anyone else according to post-race consensus. Mark that up as a win for the course setter, Peter Searle.
