Real Orienteering race (Browns Reef) 49:31 [4] *** 7.07 km (7:00 / km) +140m 6:22 / km
spiked:16/16c shoes: Pretty blue mizuno trail shoes

The BendiGo Today hagaby on Browns Reef. Spur-gully and spiders! I made some unexpected discoveries about my fitness today. For the first loop I was in a de-facto match race with Tyson Hilliard of SA. Half way through the second loop he started to draw away. The last part of the race was a loop which was common for all runners. Entering this, I was a little disillusioned to find that there were quite a few B course runners ahead of me. I had expected just Tyson and Dion to be in front of me. Obviously my fitness left a little to be desired. But there were three hills to come, and I ran each of them, and in the process overhauled most of those ahead of me. So I'm not fast but hills are a strength. Strange.

Sixty two entrants, 38 from outside Bendigo. NSW, Tasmania, Qld, Sweden and Finland were represented, with a large contingent from SA. Jim deserves congratulations for creating and running an event that is drawing a broad support from outside Bendigo. So why isn't it attractive to the locals?
Too early in the season?
Scared of spiders?
Don't like sprints or mass starts?
Like to sleep in on Sunday morning?
I suspect that many don't think of it as a real local event. We have some work to do.

Control collection. You notice the webs much more when you aren't racing.

Real Orienteering race (Saloman Gully) 24:28 [4] *** 4.82 km (5:05 / km) +60m 4:47 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Asic Gel-Torano

The first race in the BendiGo Today weekend. The venue was the Saloman Gully Reserve and the Quarry Hill Golf Course. To paraphrase Mark Twain - 'Golf is a good sprint course ruined'. I didn't need the golf to ruin the sprint. The tally-
1. route choice error from 1 to 2. 10 seconds
2. Fluffed 8, following the A course runners beyond where I was meant to go. 35 seconds
3. Stopped early in gully before 13. Should have taken the long way round on the track. 1.05 lost
4. Overshot last control as a result of the direct rather than safe route. 10 seconds
Total errors 2 minutes.

I am again surprised by how much challenge you can build into a relatively simple area.

Run home from work. Mass this afternoon 3 kg less than 2 days ago. A couple of slices of cheese fully solved any weight issue. Vegan tendencies have lessened lactose tolerance, contrary to suggestions of some on this log.

Welsford Forest tracks. Plenty of webs to break. This Sunday morning coming is going to be quite an experience for the uninitiated.

Part of me seems to have gone on strike. And I'm not talking legs. Brings to mind the old adage "if you don't ... etc'.

Back to the mundanity of the Dodder Track. No flowing water or musings of kayaking.
