MTB (Not O) 1:15:00 [3]

Riding the Spring Gully MTB track out of curiosity. Will go back with a GPS and log it. No-one can ever again tell me orienteering permits should be refused because orienteering damages the forest. I hope their aspirations do not head further afield.

Pseud-O race 38:52 [4] 5.87 km (6:37 / km) +40m 6:24 / km
shoes: Kayana White/green

A Park and Street training event. Not an event designed for orienteers but newcomers. I turned up anyway following directions from the club President not to dress like an orienteer. Polo shirt, nondescript pants. Looked like a normal (60 year old) person. This had implications.
Course notable for the placement of control 34. If you scan the map you will see evidence of me circling the building. Turns out the control was not near any corner of the building but across the path. Very funny boys...! Building was a public toilet. Being dressed somewhat like a dero, and having circled the building twice, I realised I had to move on quickly before being accosted for loitering near a public convenience.

Real Orienteering race (Norfolk Hero) 1:03:08 [4] 7.73 km (8:10 / km) +140m 7:29 / km
shoes: ASICS Kayano white

A map that would normally send me to sleep. But the format kept me awake instead. A score event with each control worth 10 points. One hour limit. ten point deduction for each minute or part thereof late. 50% score bonus if you collect the controls in odd-even-odd-even order. What was not clear was if you could revisit a control to maintain odds and even order. Probably more interesting if this not allowed.
First mistake- not having a highlighter at the start to plan the course.
Second mistake- brain fade towards the end with not much tome to get back. Missed a control and so the order for the remaining was thrown out.
Third mistake- lost count of what control I visited and so skipped a control I should have taken.
At that point I purposely visited an out of sequence control to knock down my score.
Actually more challenging than the Easter races. Pity about the map.
