Note

I am coming to believe that one of the criteria for Victoria's choice of areas to lidar is whether there is interesting orienteering terrain. If there is, exclude it from the flight.

Note

Concerned to notice that six of the past seven days have orienteering activity logged-
Thursday test running courses.
Friday checking terrain at Beechworth
Saturday local event
Sunday killing catcus on Kooyoora
Monday non orienteering day
Tuesday Mapping
Wednesday rerun course 1 from saturday.
Memo to self. Get out more. Spent part of last night looking at walk itineraries in the Pirin, Rhodope, Carpathian and Tatra Mountains. I play music that started in these places, so probably should see them.

Technical training 1:11:46 [3] *** 8.36 km (8:35 / km) +340m 7:08 / km
spiked:11/11c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Ran course 1 from saturday's event. It was an excellent course... much better than course 2. I think shorter course runners generally get short changed in long events.
Some lessons-
1. Lasted the distance though feet were hurting in the last 20 minutes.
2. The left route choice on the first long leg wasn't worth it. I think I lost 20 seconds compared with the same leg stroight on Saturday.
3. The right hand route choice on the last long leg was worthwhile. The climb was all concentrated early in the leg and was obvious enough to push people towards the left leg.
4. Improving slowly. I would be happy with another five minutes improvement on today's run.

Some weird land forms.

Walking 50:00 [1] 3.5 km (14:17 / km)

Didn't last long. Hands too cold.

Running hills 41:55 [3] 6.35 km (6:36 / km) +250m 5:31 / km
shoes: Grey Kayano

Hard Mackenzie return. Gained 10 seconds on last week. I think the easy improvements are over.

Note

No running today. Cactus destruction instead. I suspect the local orienteering community will become known as the extreme cactus group. The location on the northern slopes of Kooyoora was a little too arduous for the local landcare members.

1 PM

Real Orienteering race (Sedgwick) 46:32 [3] *** 5.38 km (8:39 / km) +260m 6:58 / km
spiked:9/10c shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

30th Bush event for year. Equal to last years total.
Ted-set event on Sedgwick. Somewhat physical, bit route choice took the mind off that. One blemish- went too high on first control and lost 50 seconds. That proved decisive in the personal competition.
3 PM

Running 17:00 [2] 2.0 km (8:30 / km) +45m 7:38 / km
shoes: Salamon Speed Cross 4 Black

Collecting controls

Note

Spent the daylight hours on a trip to Beechworth to be taken on a tour by Leigh Privett. Then drove back to Bendigo to catch a train. Made it by 30 seconds. Off to Melbourne for OV Council meeting. Big day. Big conundrum. One map needed, three excellent areas.
