SWSW - Javalina Hustle - Long (10.5k)

Goat style race split onto two maps, each about 5 km long. On each map you could skip 1 control.

Started out strong (aka too fast) keeping up with a group near the front through the first several controls, and even making up some time when I didnt get sucked into people following skippers. I decided to skip #8 as it was one of the best doglegs to save climb and distance. While this did put me out alone, it ended up hurting me as I overshot 10 costing me a lot of climb and confusion, and about an 8 minute mistake!

I slowed down after that and was able to execute my approaches with purpose. At the map exchange I took a little time to ponder options and decided to skip the first control, as it was a 1.5 km leg with a lot of up and down. This let me do a simialrly long leg, but execute almost all on trail with a lot less climb. It was a good mental break. The second map went really well, just some hesitation approaching 19 mostly because I could see people on spurs other than mine, and I couldnt understand why they would be there if they werent headed to the same control I was. Eventually convinced myself I was right (I was) and finished strong.

Fun goat. I should have skipped later on the first map to stay with the pack longer, and therefore avoid my big mistake.

Race was in the foothills at 5000 ft, so it was a lot cooler, and not sunny. Carrying water was still a good idea.
