Haven Hill Score - O by Jen, Steve, and Angel
30 controls, 1370 points, 2.5 hour limit
~50F and wet
Wow, my nav was soooo shakey today, I could not make sense of the map, keep track of where I was, or spike anything. Likely a combo of slightly different scale than used to, slightly hard to read contours, starting off wayyyy to fast trying to keep up with mark, my overall route choice, and my mind being preoccupied.
Chose a counterclockwise loop and of course planned to clear it. Turns out the first couple were in thick woods and subtle features, so missing them destroyed my confidence and chances for clearing.
31 - overshot
51 - good
73 - Really thick, and a very subtle reentrant. Hard to see the flag until you were on top of it, so some hesitation
41 - expected it would be easy to see a hill, but got pushed around and overshot, ending up on the water. Turned around expecting to be able to identify a hill to no avail. Stumbled on it when heading to reattack.
43 - Came up short on some hills that were mapped white but had very clearning like appearances. Eventually decided to bail and found it on the next hill.
72. Got sucked south leaving 43 and ended u on the wrong N-S portion of road. Cut in towards 72, but ended up chest deep in an uncrossable swamp. My first time being genuinly concerned for my wellbeing while orienteering. Luckily i was able to pull myself out and didnt lose a shoe. Back to the road to reattack.
34 - things started getting a little better. Stopped for water, saw tom, and decided I wasnt in as much hot water as i thought.
61 - followed tom
53 - followed the water featurs, slightly overshot but corrected quickly. Decided to skip 32 since it was low points and I was already an hour in.
56 - Out to the road, easy to see the pine trees and head in
33 - trail run
44 - cut in at the rocky ground
54 - trail S to trail E, cut in at the top of the hill. Expected a rootstock so checked a few before finding it.
52 - Approached from the N. Found a rock pile with no flag and decided I was too far east so corrected
35 - right feature, but wrong mapped trails? luckily I saw it from the trail
63 - trail around, hill was easy to identify, then it was just getting up it.
47 - finally some fast moving areas through the feild. stopped for water
59 - more speed
45 - very slippery muddy hill, but made it up right at the flag
48 - took a wrong turn and ended up out at the road. Also had to stop to fix my insole.
64 - didnt really see any forest corners... but found it ok
39 - no problems
49 - trail run
57 - had decided to skip, but when i got out to the campground loop it was too juicy so i went for it
55 - easy
42 - no problem
71 - topo crazyness so I took my time. Thought I was in the right spot and no flag, so i checked the adjacent depression and found it. In hindsight im pretty sure I was wrong initially. headed towards finish
37 - got ot the parking lot with 3 minutes, and decided to go for it
F - 40 seconds to spare
1290/1370 points. Without the early mistakes I think clearing would have been fine, but it shook my confidence so then I skipped a 30 early and a 50 late. Oh well, everyone has a bad day once in a while. Still fun despite the wetness and troubles.
