This is the first of two trail run options FROM HOME!!! 3/4 miles on road and then a 2 mile loop through Lisha Kill nature preserve. Trail was well traveled and about an inch of crunchy snow on top of a bed of ice from the freezing rain a few days ago. Very pleasant running conditions. A few decent moderate hills and one stream crossing on a log. This will be a great standard 40 min run :)

SWSW Lincoln Park Motola 6.1km

With the weather rearranging the schedule we asked for this map early and got it printed at UPS to do as a streamer training. Took some of the fun out of it, being the only people in the woods, but still fun.

I chose to go in the order that looked like hardest to easiest. I had a rough start adjusting to the scale and way overshot 1. The whole first loop (c) I had trouble getting into it, and even the second loop (a) I was making dumb mistakes. Legs felt so heavy. By the third loop (b) I was finally mentally in it but just slow feeling. I found a vast majority of the streamers but 3 or 4 I didn’t, and 1 or 2 I might have been in the wrong place.

Glad to fit in one more O in the desert! Thanks to all the SWSW folks!

SWSW campus sprint

The rogaine got cancelled due to blizzard like conditions with high winds! No complaints about that. Weather in town was a little less bad (windy and rainy and cold, but nothing severe). Went to the local UPS store to print some make up maps provided by the organizers. Much appreciated! I did a crude georeference and recreated sprint courses on the UA campus. Met up with Steve and angle and did about a 30 second start stagger with Syd then Steve then me then Angel.

I passed Steve at 4, but he was having o-range issues. I passed Syd at 7-8 by figuring out the canopy/tunnel a little more efficiently. I had some recollection of that area from the 2016 sprint. Overall it went well, but legs were shot and I had my normal struggles figuring out exactly where to expect the flag. Not 100% sure I always went to where the flag would have been. Still fun though! And appreciated there being an option for the cancelled event!

SWSW ironwood picnic area “training” - red middle/classic ish

This was some fun technical orienteering. The map was dead flat and basically just an endless series of very subtle gullies. Cactus was not very dense so it was much more runable than the last few days. I survived by careful compass work and counting gullies, and it actually went very well. Let 5 will register as a mistake, but it was actually a significant pause while I pulled out 5-6 pieces of jumping cholla out of my shoulder/back/side- that’s going to leave a mark. Syd caught up near the end and we went back and fourth through the last 3 controls, fun to push each other. Great training day!

SWSW - cholla chaser

Handicapped event that starts with a “box” and you needed to find 1-7 controls depending on your age category, followed by a standard 6 control course everyone does the same.

Of course, being M21, I got to do the whole shebang. Started out with a large group that did the first 3 pretty much the same. Lots of trail options, and dry stream beds that were also pretty open. But the off trail throughout the map was a large variety of dense cacti. For the second half of the box I saw lots of people, but at this point they were coming and going in different directions. It was fun to see so many people though!

I finished the box and headed on to the rest of the course in a small train of people going similar speed that I would go back and forth with. 8-10 went well but 11 and 12 we were all bumbling around through thick stuff in stupid directions, I think group think was at play more than navigation, but it was also just tough traveling in this section. Couldn’t quite catch the two people in front of me on the last trail leg, but I did close th gap.

Despite the numerous cactus spikes I just pulled out of my legs, I had a lot of fun. Nav went well and I thought the course did a great job of keeping a lot of people close to each other.

Reid park sprint, map and course provided by Cristina

I roughly georeferenced the map and made the course into an O-range file for watch punching- worked fantastic! Intended to go out for an easy recovery run, but that never works so I went pretty much sprint pace. Park was busy this evening but no one paid any attention to me. Grear course with a few good route choice legs, some of which I’m not sure I made the right choice.

Thank you for the bonus O!!
