Orienteering race 11:33:00 [5] 30.5 mi (22:43 / mi)

Sleepy Hollow Rogaine - 12 hr

Got our maps at ~7am. BF and I went solo and we planned our routes separately. I chose a route that would allow me to hit all the checkpoints in a couple loops, although I didn't expect to clear the course. Race started at 9. It was starting to warm up by then, mid-50's throughout the day.

My first checkpoint was on a big hill next to the start...in hindsight not the best choice. Didn't have a very good start. I didn't feel the best (I think I was dehydrated) and my navigation was meh. It took me a few checkpoints to adjust for the differences between the usual MI maps and the OH maps with the mega hills. There were a lot of features (mainly re-entrants) that weren't on the map or were but in less detail than I expected. First error was at 43, went way too far N from the trail, ended up in the wrong re-entrant. Realized my mistake and headed back toward the trail, luckily passing right by 43 on the way. Made another error on 53, followed a group up a spur and it turned out to be the wrong one...of course. After that things started looking up.

Met up with BF on the way to the N section, we were doing the same loop in opposite directions. Decided to team up to hit 71 and 81. Whew, there were some big hills up there. Made my final big error after we split up, headed up the wrong re-entrant twice on my way to 45. Finally found it and then headed up the hill to 54. Steepest hill of the race, had to resort to using my hand to make it up the last part.

The rest of the race went really well, I was feeling a lot better and my navigation was right on. Jogged on flats/downhills the last third. Started getting dark when I hit 63. I had no trouble with night navigation, hit my last 5 points spot on, which I was really excited about. Missed 4 checkpoints overall. I might have had time to hit 1 more, but it would have been really close.

Wore a t-shirt and my yellow bike jacket almost the entier race. I didn't get as cold at night as I expected, all those hills probably helped. Would wear gaiters next time, so many green briars! Random note: PBJ was not a good snack. Overall had a great time!

Route: 52, 42, 43, 53, 31W, 65, 66, 61, 71, 81, 45, 54, 75, 44, 55, 33, 41, 32, 51, 30W, 60, 50, 63, 62, 40, 74, 64, 73 (1440/1740)

Orienteering race 1:37:45 [4] 5.7 mi (17:09 / mi)

Pretty clean run overall. Definitely helped that the woods were so open, made it easy to see the controls. First big mistake was on 10. I walked right past the control, not realizing I had until I hit the trail. Quickly reattacked and found the control without any trouble, not sure how I missed it the first time through. Going from 11-12 I could have been a lot more efficient. Took the road a little too far south and ended up taking the trail in and back north. Overall it went well, really happy with my time. Loved the open woods!
