Event: Raccoongaine

Orienteering race (Racoongaine ) 5:48:01 [5] **** 19.68 mi (17:41 / mi)
30c

BF and I did this race together. We got our maps at 9 am and started planning. After dividing the map into sections and counting points it looked like the southern section had the highest point density. So we decided to start with the southern section, CCW, skipping a few that we thought weren't worth the effort, and then head N depending on how much time we had left. We were a little tight on planning time and weren't sure how much ground we could cover, so our end game wasn't very well thought out. Something to improve upon for future races.

The race started at 10 am and we were off! There were quite a few teams that picked the same first and second control as we did, but after that it started to clear out. We jogged as much as we could on the flats/downs of roads/trails. The mystery controls were my favorite, added a little extra excitement to finding the flag.

I took the lead on navigation, passing off to BF for a few points. He tried to stay engaged with the map, so it was quick to trade off/take bearings. Our navigation was great, I'd say best teamwork so far. We stuck to easy attackpoints, even if it meant a slightly longer route, but I think it paid off. We didn't get lost once, only had a couple times where we were a little confused, but all minor. I planned our next route while BF punched the flag to minimize standing around planning time. Overall, an excellent race navigation wise.

Felt pretty good for the whole race. No knee pain!! My foot kept almost cramping whenever we were on a lengthy side hill, but it was fine as soon as we were back to flats. BF was flagging at the end. I'm convinced we had time to grab another 10 points, but BF really didn't want to and I was a little worried about getting up the hill to the finish in time.

Temps in the high 30s with light snow all day, I was happy it never switched to rain.

990 points, 1/8 coed elite, 7/58 overall

Out and back down Joy. Ate dinner before and had a cramp most of the ride. Who knew you could get a side cramp biking? BF said it was training in case I ate too much during a race...but we decided that seemed like a pretty unlikely scenario.
