Adventure Race 9:14:20 [5] 54.7 mi (10:08 / mi) +1096m 9:32 / mi

Sleeping Bear 10 hr AR

Topo the Mountain - 2 person co-ed

Camped at Interlochen with some friends and drove over to the start morning of. Checked in and then worked on getting all our gear ready. I've never been so forgetful in my life, pretty sure it took me twice as long as it should have to get ready because I couldn't remember where I had packed anything. Finally got ready and headed to the race meeting to get maps. Planned our route and we were off!

Bike 1: First time we've done a mass bike start, it was fun.

Trek 1: Dropped our bikes and grabbed 3 quick points on foot. We were very happy the sand was still wet, the dune climb wasn't too bad.

Paddle: Rented a tandem kayak, which worked pretty well. Maybe a canoe would've been a little faster on the open water? We chose to go CCW around the lake. It was pretty windy. There was a strong crosswind on the way back to the TA that made it difficult to keep the boat straight, and it was very choppy by the time we got off the water.

Bike 2: Quick bike to TA2.

Trek 2: We chose to hit the W section first, so we could warm-up on some easier points. Did a CW loop, staying high once we were up on the ridge. Then we headed across the road to grab the rest of the points. Our only problem was 16. We ended up in the wrong reentrant, and after a little bit of wandering headed back up to the hilltop to reattack. Hit it right on and then just brute forced the last 2 CPs. The volunteer at the TA said there was just one team ahead of us, but we didn't believe him.

Bike 3: There were more hills on the bike than we were expecting. Spent a couple minutes looking for 19, we had biked just past the re-entrant, but found it pretty quickly. No other troubles, just chugged along up all the hills.

Trek 3: Grabbed the map and started walking without making a plan, so that decided our route. Hit the N points first, CW. Had a little trouble with 23, but after a bit of searching heard a 5 hr team shouting they had found it, so didn't lose too much time. I was getting a little sloppy with the nav and on the way to 25 BF told me to keep focused, or something along those lines. For some reason this stuck with me and I made sure to have a good plan for the remaining points. By the time we got to 27 we were both struggling. BF was really dehydrated and I had a pounding headache. Kept it together on the nav and just kept trudging along.

Bike to Finish: Volunteers said we were still in second, and we believed them this time, kept looking back expecting another team to zoom past. Felt like we were crawling up those last hills. Never got passed though. Grabbed the last few CPs and booked it back to the finish.

Finished 2nd overall, really happy with that! Still need to work on body management, making sure we are eating and drinking enough.
