Orienteering race 5:57:09 [5] 20.27 mi (17:37 / mi) +1276m 14:44 / mi
shoes: Solomon Speedcross - Green

Frozen Beaver
Lake Hope State Park

Drove down the night before with Mr. W and Michelle. Ross had reserved a cabin near the start, so we crashed there for the night. The cabin was great, warm, clean, hot water. Highly recommended!

Check-in began at 8 the next morning and the race didn't start until 10, so lots of time to plan. I decided on a CW route that included all the CPs and also had good bail options.

Race started with a big downhill from the lodge. I was with quite a few people headed to the first couple controls, but it thinned out surprisingly quickly after that. Small mistake headed to 71. I got pushed too far S headed down from 53 and ended up miscounting reentrants. Looked briefly in the wrong spot before heading to the correct location. A few groups caught up to me at this point and I had one couple following me for the next 4-5 controls. My navigation was clean through this section and I pushed the pace so I was finally able to lose them.

After I hit 56 I was on the road for quite a stretch, with some detours for CPs, so I kept up a trot on the flats and downs. Another small error on 44, the trail was mapped incorrectly and the lake wasn't where I expected it to be, so I ended up overshooting. I quickly realized that I had gone too far, turned around, proceeded to climb up one reentrant too early, finally figured out what had happened and then popped over the spur into the correct reentrant to grab the CP.

Smooth sailing for a while after that. Briefly forayed down the wrong road on my way to 45 - I was deterred by the 'Do Not Enter' sign, should've ignored it. Followed a beautiful spur down to 61. There was a nice trail the whole way through these pretty areas of golden grass. Walked right past 50. I mistakenly read it as being at a stream junction, but it was up on the side of the hill at a neat little rock face.

At this point I knew I wasn't going to clear and decided to drop the 3 points in the SE corner. Headed out to grab 52. The trail didn't match what was on the map, which confused me more than it should have, so I ended up moving pretty slowly on the way out. Everything was clean after that, ended up having to drop 42. Made it back to the finish with 5 or so minutes to spare!

Very fun race!! I was way overdressed for the weather. It was 35 and sunny, I would've been fine in a t-shirt and my bike jacket instead of my heavier coat. And just pants instead of pants and tights. I didn't do a great job of eating and drinking, still something I need to work on when going solo. Happy with the navigation. No big errors, just a number of small ones that added up in the end. Even without those I think I only would've had time to get another 40 points.

Placed 1st in the solo division. ? OA.

Note

Took a wilderness first aid course at REI this weekend. It was long, 9-6 both days, but definitely worth it.
