KFish wanted to go for a run...legs actually felt pretty good. Shins are really tight though. Keeping up with electrolytes/water during a race makes all the difference!

Racoongaine 2017
Topo the Mountain w/ KFish

Got our maps at 9 and started planning. We decided to go around the lake first and then head N. Even though we had been around the lake last year, it seemed like that route offered better end game options.

Race started at 10 and we were off! Headed to the first flag with a large group which very quickly thinned out. Hit a mother control right off that took us to a very cool little waterfall. Zoomed around the S part of the lake, lots of trail/road and pretty minimal climb. Hit the farthest point a little over 2 hours in, which was very close to our goal. Heading back along the N side of the lake was a little rough. There were fewer trails and bigger hills, so it felt like we were moving so slowly. Navigation was clean, small error on 142 - ended up too far N and took a few minutes to locate the old brick building. Kept chugging along though and made it to our decision point (107) with a little under 2 hours left.

We had a 'short' and a 'long' option for the N section of the map. Sat down on a bench to consider our options, and since we were doing well on time decided to go for the longer route. Ended up hitting all but one of our planned CPs and finished with a few minutes to spare! Very happy with our route, pushed to the end and I don't think there were any other CPs we could've gotten without being late.

Overall, navigation was very clean. Drifted on a few bearings, but we always hit the right feature, just added a little distance. Such a nice map for a rogaine. First race where I stuck to my food plan - electrolytes on the 30 min and food on the hours. Felt a lot better than I usually do the second half of the race. Weather was great, mid-60's and overcast. Light rain for <30 min. Lot of ticks.

Finished 1st co-ed and 3rd (?) overall. Lots of fun!!

Trails were super squishy, so bailed after the short loop and just ran the road.
