Python Rogaine - 10 h

Drove over to Camp Butler in the a.m. We arrived around 8:15 which gave us plenty of time to prepare gear before maps were handed out at 9. We had decided in advance to race this one solo as we expected it to be a warm one. (It did end up being a hot day with a high in the low to mid-80’s.) I planned a CCW route that hit all 70 CPs. Based on distance it looked like I might be able to clear as long as my navigation was clean and I could keep up a trot on trails/roads.

Started off at 10 to the sound of an air horn. Bobbled my first control (109). The trails didn’t quite do what I was expecting and I ended up overshooting. Moved quickly through the NE portion of the map, going back and forth with Todd P. I got a bit confused approaching 69. I climbed a different hill than the one I intended to climb. Sorted it out quickly though. After that it was smooth sailing for a while. Stopped to refill my water at 46. I was about 15 minutes behind my time estimates at this point, but they were a bit optimistic so I was happy with my pace.

Finished up the NW section at about 4 hours. This was followed by a lot of road running. It was hot and my legs were not very happy. I don’t cramp in the heat, but my legs just hurt. Ignored it, kept up with eating/electrolytes and it never got too bad. Successfully navigated through the corn maze. I was missing Kevin because he always does the corn maze navigation. We must have just missed each other because we were both there at the 5 hour mark.

It got really windy/cloudy as I headed back N. It looked like it would rain, but it only sprinkled briefly. The cloud cover was nice. I went out the wrong spur for 43. Corrected before I went too far down. I stopped at the shelter near 103 to refill my bladder. There was a large group of very nicely dressed people there taking wedding photos. I felt quite out of place covered in dirt, burrs, and scratches.

Made it to 80 with 2.5 hours to go. Sat down to put on my headlamp and decided I would definitely have time to go around the lake at the end - I could always drop a few low pointers if I was tight on time. Felt like it took forever to do 61 – 71 – 50. Made it to 101 with 1:20 to go. It was looking like I would clear! And then I stopped paying attention… I had my map flipped 180 degrees and lost 10 minutes, having no idea where I was for a portion of that time. Finally got it sorted and made it to 111.

Moved as quickly as I could through the remaining 10 pointers. My L foot was starting to hurt (from last weekend) so my trot was pretty slow. Turned my headlamp on at 112. Also turned off my watch gps because I had used the wrong mode and the battery was about to die (added in time/distance). Didn’t quite have enough time to get them all. Ended up dropping 106 and 110. Probably could have cleared without my error after 101. Ah well.

Fun day out in the woods! Really enjoyed the course. 68/70 CPs. 2nd OA.

WPOC Score-O at Frick Park

Fun day in the woods. I like this park. It was hot, but low humidity so it didn't feel as bad as I was expecting. Twisted my ankle pretty badly within the first 15 min so it was not happy for the rest of the time. Navigation was clean. A few minor bobbles in the circle because I wasn't looking at the clues. I was 35s late...first time that I've ever been over time on a score-o/rogaine!
