Hiking 2:34:00 [3]8.2 mi (18:46 / mi) +467m 9:55 / km
shoes: Timberland Vapor XCR
Hike to Echo Amphitheater, then up the Chamisa Trail. The trail was mostly ice and snow, with some sections of mud and dirt. We kicked steps in the ice on the steep traverses. Then we climbed backcountry to the summit of Peak 8800.

Alpine Skiing 4:45:00 [3]

Excellent powder skiing, with some windslab in the open bowls. Favorite descents of the day were everything on Alberta Lift, especially down through the trees on Abracadabra, Tsunami, and Gyro.

On the map, Abracadabra and Tsunami are shown as Black Diamonds, but when I got there, ominous signs were placed all across the tops of the runs, saying Double Black Diamond, Expert Only. Fortunately they turned out to be really fun descents, so I skied them several times,

At the top of one chute a furry white ermine with a black nose and a black spot on the tip of its tail scampered across the slope in front of me then disappeared into the forest. :-)

Later in the day there were whiteout conditions with high winds, and no other skiers in sight. I came to a signed trail intersection, and checked to find the location on my map, but those two trails do not even come close to intersecting on the map. So I just skied through the trees in the general direction of the base lodge.

Apres-ski, I overheard other skiers saying that they were often concerned about getting lost due to the huge amount of terrain, whiteout conditions, the lack of signage, and the signs that did not match the map.

I think this ski resort should hire a couple of orienteers with strong downhill skiing skills to update the maps to coincide with the terrain!

All in all, an excellent day with fun terrain to explore.

Ski Mountaineering hills 5:45:00 [4]** +1397m

Today our gang of ten (two friends from yesterday could not make it today) climbed and skied Mt. Diller three times. We found a solid snowbridge over the main creek but had to ski down a steep bank to the snowbridge.

The first climb up Mt. Diller was hardpack and icy at the top so I used my harscheisen. Then the dense clouds rolled in and the descent was in low visibility, but we found a nice slope that was hardpack with a dusting of powder - perfect!

The second climb we had a brief graupel downpour, but then the sun came out and the snow was wonderfully soft corn for our second descent - totally fun!

The third climb up the corn snow was great, but it was getting colder, and by the time we descended, the upper slopes were ski-chattering bulletproof boiler plate, but the lower slopes were really fun soft powder. We found our snowbridge, climbed up the steep bank, then descended more beautiful corn and powder to finish up a great day with great friends.

Climbed and skied Brokeoff Mountain three times on beautiful corn snow. The fir trees on the ridge at the summit were completely rimed on the windward side. Skied with the gang of 12 friends. We had some interesting navigating on the final descent.

Beautiful day and amazingly good snow conditions. Climbed Sun Peak and had a very fun descent. Some of the snowbridges have melted, so had to ford the stream, then climb up onto the downed trees that crossed only about 70% of the way across the stream. Another stream crossing had sketchy snow on the log but I managed to ski to the end of the log, then doff the skis and jump across to the far bank.
