The aspens (Populus tremuloides) and willows (Salix alpina) are now brilliant gold and aglow in the sunshine. A plump Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) blocked my way on the path but finally waddled across. Very pretty day.

Day 3 JMT
Hiked to Shadow Lake and Rosalie Lake, with continuous spectacular views of the Minarets and Volcanic Ridge. Saw bear paw prints in a snow patch near Gladys Lake. Hiked through Johnston Meadow, then to Devils Postpile National Monument to see the interesting hexagonal columns. The Devils Postpile is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the worlds finest examples of columnar basalt. Finished our enjoyable excursion at Reds Meadow. High point 10,060'. Mileage = 11.4 on trail plus 6.2 exploring off trail.

Climbed Donohue Pass (11,056') in the fresh snow. Crossed out of the Tuolumne River drainage and into the headwaters of Rush Creek and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Climbed Island Pass (10,203'), bringing us into the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. Hiked along Garnet Lake, and set up camp on the northwest shore. Watched a beautiful sunset over Banner Peak and Mt. Ritter. High point = 11,056'. Mileage = 12.4 on trail plus 3.9 scrambling around Island Pass, Ruby Lake, and Garnet Lake.

Backpacking with David, Don, and Kim. Started at Tuolumne Meadows and hiked up Lyell Canyon. Passed through a wide avalanche swath with large downed trees. Climbed up to a nice camping spot on Maclure Creek, arriving just as snow started falling. Woke up at midnight for a pleasant hike in the fresh snow under the full moon. High point = 9680'. Mileage = 10.7 on trail plus 1.0 midnight hike and 0.5 along the river.
