| Climb up to the crest with Tom and Rosalie, then scramble over to South Lake for a swim. Black anvil-shaped thunderheads gave ominous warnings of possible stormy weather. Just as we finished swimming, lightning started flashing and thunder booming. We decided to head back the long way through the forest along the mountainside to stay below the ridge. It sprinkled on us very slightly, but we finished up before the rain started pouring. |

| Last night I installed a new type of clip-in pedals on my mountain bike, and today took them for a maiden voyage. My Shimano She-Mojo mountain bike shoes are not compatible with the new pedal/cleat system, so had to use a different pair of shoes. How will my ride go without my favorite Mojo shoes?
On one of the rocky sections, my front wheel spun out about 60 degrees, but I lucked out and instinctively counter-steered quickly enough to avoid falling. So far so good! Had a good run up the meadow and stream section, easily maneuvering through the rocks.
Then I headed up a very narrow, rocky section, got steered off the trail by a large rock and into some slippery talus, my front wheel skidded sideways, and down I went into the dirt.
Looking like a real mountain biker now (arms and legs covered with dark dirt), I continued up the narrow trail section.
After a while, I noticed a rubbing sound from my back wheel, got off, and found the rear brake bolt missing - it could have dislodged anywhere along the trail, and I would rather continue riding than go searching for it. So I removed the rear brake and continued on, using just the front brake.
Then the trail widened, with plenty of rocks but nice narrow openings between them - totally fun. Then I got a flat (rear tire of course).
Well, I hardly ever get flat tires, so I am about due, and it's a nice day to practice changing a flat. Found a big boulder to sit on and repaired the tire.
What else could happen? Continuing on, took a fun descent, then heard another rubbing sound from the back wheel. What? Just a small tree branch got caught up in there. Tossed the branch out, and finished up with no more distractions.
Miss the Mojo, but really like the new pedals!

| Climb cross country up the East Face of Ruby Ridge with David, through very steep pine forest, then scree, then up beautiful granite slabs to the top of the ridge. Lunch on the ridge at 8400' in the warm sun.
Then scramble down the West Face down huge stacks of granite boulders, then fun glissades down sandy sections.
Then we came to a very steep descending section that would be charted as "vegetation fight" on an orienteering map, and any sensible orienteer would avoid it, but there was no other way down. The extrememly dense shrubs varied from 2 to 5 feet tall. We discovered the best way to travel down it was to grab onto shrub tops with your hands for balance, then walk on top of the bending branches from one shrub to another. The manzanita had thick red branches that bent easily and provided enough support to walk on top of them. But some of the other shrubs were quite slippery.
Finally the shrubs gave way to pine forest and thorn bushes. We found plenty of large diameter downed trees to walk across and stay above the thorn bushes. Then we came to the stream and walked along the banks to Cliff Lake, where we jumped in for a refrehsing swim.
Then, back up a beautiful granite slope, and fun rock hopping to finish the trip.
